A MEDEVAC aircraft is considered the same thing as a walking ground medic, both don't shoot and both administer aid to anyone. We got shot at all the time though. The big red cross on the side makes for an easy target. I can't say I wouldn't do the same if some helicopters were flying around the USA with a big red crescent moon on the side, so I never held it against them.

Believe it or not we took the rule to rescue all wounded (including enemy) seriously. By "we" I mean the medics and MEDEVAC pilots. In general we were hated among our military for saving "enemy combatant" lives. As a result we were pretty much hated by everyone, except whoever's lives we saved that day.
