All that being said though, I live in Texas and have no idea how other "states" run themselves or the quality of life anyone from there has. All I can say is that if there is ever a roll-call done for statesmen in concerts, gatherings, etc. that Texans are seemingly always the loudest, happiest, and obnoxious.

All the downsides you list depend on highly improbable events. If I break a leg (I've had much worse trauma surgery), my insurance from work covers it. I've never gotten fired and know few people who have, because most people are competent. Almost nobody needs expensive operations - insurance (including the European-style public safety net) only works because those operations are rare. The things you worry about are akin to worrying that a terrorist is going to blow up your plane or that your neighbor will smoke bath salts and turn into a cannibal. They just don't happen to ordinary people. The vast majority goes through life without needing to worry.

Being able to juggle diverse populations has been one of the greatest challenges this country's faced since its inception, and now that we're waking up and realizing that "I prefer the sea to the mountains" and "I prefer beheading apostates and stoning women to behaving like a civilized human being" are not equivalent, we might actually pull our heads out of our asses and appreciate what a wonderful country this is for once.

Wealth distribution seemed to be shockingly unbalanced in London - a brief tour around the Royal Exchange made that abundantly clear. After seeing the royal jewels in London and how lavishly the British royalty lived during the colonial period in America, I can honestly say I've never been prouder of my ancestors for slaughtering every last red coat that they could. In Iceland, it seemed that the only ones who could afford good quality food/goods were tourists. The Icelanders I spoke with basically shopped at bonus and traded with neighbors, explaining that prices were just as overwhelmingly high for them as they were for tourists (their salaries weren't any higher to offset the high cost of living). The Czech Republic was nice, but it seemed like everyone was out to make a buck via scams (overcharging on restaraunt bills, returning out of circulation bills, pickpockets, etc), chain smokers everywhere, infrastructure worse than the US (National Museum is fucking collapsing right now, AFTER catching fire), and the wooorst fucking service I've had the misfortune of dealing with (look it up online, they treat tourists and locals like shit - apparently it's cultural and it's even taken a significant toll on their economy).

I haven't paid a dime out of pocket for healthcare in a long time, I just use what is in the HSA to pay for GP visits and any medicine I might need. If I have a serious problem like a surgery I pay up to the first $5k of the cost of the procedure which sucks but I could deal with it. That is, if the HSA was empty, I have over $5k in there so it would still cost me nothing. Since I only rarely use money from it by the time I am an old fart I will have a shitload of cash sitting in that HSA to cover my old fart health expenses. That is, assuming we don't elect a commie fuck like bernie sanders and end up nationalizing everyone's assets like venezuela. But at that point everyone is fucked anyway whether they saved or not.

Corporate health insurance is through the roof and since the infrastructure is already in place here there is no reason to expect it to be any better if the government stepped in.

That and, the US is one of the world's centers for development and experimental treatment.

I totally understand why some countries do great with free healthcare, but 1. doing it like Canada where you are not allowed to also purchase extra care UK style is awful, and 2. the US would be doing fucking great if we had a Singapore system with a ban on low deductible insurance and forced wage garnishing plus a basic guaranteed medical spending budget and means tested free high deductible insurance.

Plastic surgery for example, a tit job costs like $3000 and the procedures and technology advance much faster than other medical areas. Some simple procedures that are much simpler than that $3k tit job cost 10s of thousands of dollars more because of the involvement of the government and insurance, and isn't as advanced as it could be.

You just need to ban all low deductible insurance and especially all inclusive plans where you are always just paying a copay.

Personally, the saddest part of living in America is how distant everything and everybody is. I loved living in Japan and being within walking distance of shops and a bus ride from downtown. It's not a lack of land, the Japanese just love being close to each other. In America I feel like I am always traveling in a sealed vehicle, separated from my city and neighbors.
