Count on prevention only, as soon as there's irradiated iodine in your thyroids it's gonna get distributed. But it might help a little after you're exposed, can't hurt worse than what 600 REM will do to you.

It's not going to actually cure you but it saturates you, increases iodine levels in your blood to help reduce the effects of radiation in the short term. You'd pretty much have to keep drinking liquor nonstop, as in, every drink would need to be liquor, to be "protected" in any sense of the word.

Think of it like trying to dilute irradiated water with alcohol. That's a good way of looking at it. It's not really gonna do much and eventually the alcohol's gonna be irradiated too but it helps till you find something to be more effective.

I've always heard that taking iodine is the best thing to do. When a nuclear bomb explodes, your body takes in radioactive iodine isotopes which get absorbed by your lymphnodes and stay there forever, giving you severe radiation poisoning for the rest of your life. But if you take iodine before that, or as soon as you can, your lymph nodes will absorb the good iodine before the radioactive iodine can harm you too much
