The initial agreement between Germany and AH, however, had not in fact been a strictly defensive alliance; it was always a pact of backing them up in the event that war broke out for whatever reason. And considering that up to the American entrance into the war (and on the exact side they initially seemed the -least- likely to support) we were effectively leading the field, I wouldn't go so far as to say the war was unwinnable. In retrospect, sure. But at the time it must have seemed like the most promising approach to getting the inevitable over with; still a gamble, but not a fool's errand.

I am not a fan of Bush 2, either, but the entire gov't was to blame for the recession. Very few spoke out against the policies leading to the real estate bubble, and investors betting against were, and still are, to some extent, vilified. Bush tried to appease too many via big spending and made a lot of poor decisions, but the recession was hardly on him entirely. Obama hasn't done jack shit to help the recession, either. All he has worked toward is "redistribution of wealth" and growing government even more, both of which will bite us in the ass years down the road without real improvement in economic policies.
