Well, technically they can check you up. I was checked by a patrol once in my life. Though not searched, they just asked for a passport. T'was in my belt bag, in a compartment next to the one holding my gas gun, which became clearly visible once I opened it and reached behind it to get the document.

St. Petersberg is literally the nicest place I've ever been in my life. The people were much friendlier than the people in Rome, London, and Paris. I'm not sure if the rest of the country is so great, but I would definitely recommend that you go to Russia at least once before you die.
