A snub nosed revolver if you're not very adapted to using firearms. I assume you're wanting one for concealed carry. That means you'll want a less than full sized pistol, so don't think about carrying around a .44 magnum like Dirty Harry

Revolvers are good for those shit hits the fan moments because they don't need to be cocked and can't jam. With a revolver there's always a bullet ready to be fired, no such thing as an empty chamber, that is unless you didn't load the fucking thing.

Downside is that you'll usually only have 6 shots and reloads take longer.

Why?

Imagine how many situations you'll find yourself in where lethal force is required. If you've got incredibly bad luck maybe once or twice in your life time.

Why not a knife? Because knives don't work. In a fight you can stab a guy multiple times but unless you hit something that will end him forever he'll probably wont even feel it due to the adrenaline.

I like the Ruger Alaskan for my snub nosed revolver needs. You lose a lot of energy on .454 rounds from the short barrel, but the versatility of .45 LC and .45 ACP (with moon clips), is too much to pass up.

If I'm using .454, I'd want to have a full length revolver. There's no real benefit in running .454 in a snub. Better off going .357, and running .38 spc for practice.

I have an Alaskan specifically for bear defense, but with in excess of 1000 ft/lbs of muzzle energy in a snub nosed revolver, it's hard to beat it at anything but accuracy. Well, that and maintaining the will to live after being pummeled by it's recoil six times.
