Before the 2000s teenagers mowed lawns and help with "day labor" type jobs. Teenagers worked in kitchens and as bussers. This taught Americans how to work so when they got their first "real" job they understood business and hard work.
Working teenagers also got the youth out in the world and they knew their neighbors and communities.
