The tea tax was introduced to pay for the Royal Navy to protect the ships that brought tea to the AMERICAN colonies through some of the most (and still) pirate infested waters in the world.
After the insurrection, three quarters of the tea ships no longer stopped at the fledgling United States, chiding to go directly to England where the tea was sold to smaller traders who than sold it in the USA. Adding the increased shipping cost, raising the price per pound above what was paid before the violent colonists paired before the rebellion with tax.

Except this isn't true. There is very little historical evidence at all to suggest that an American identity was an actual concept among populations in the colonies prior to the war. Even at the outbreak of revolution, the independence fighters didn't even have a majority support among colonists. It was essentialy a civil war amongst new generation white Anglo-Saxon protestant colonists over who they wanted to rule them, and a huge number of 'Americans' didn't support it (and there was a huge migratory shift to Canada over time after this as well).

American identity and independence were literally just things predominantly spurred on by, created by and used for wealthy landowners and political pamphleteers and agitators to redistribute land and power in the colonies in their favour.

American culture and identity are real, but they didn't exist in their own right in 1773. Those colonists were British (and other nationalities) and most of them first and second generation indentured servants who went there to work and create a new life.

This and the fact that at the time of the independence war, the Thirteen Colonies were really not particularly profitable or valuable compared to other areas of the world (especially when considering the strategic cost involved in defending and supporting them).

There's something to be said for the argument that the British stopping their investment into the Thirteen Colonies is what directly contributed towards the new focus of colonialism in Asia and Africa, where there was an rnormous growth of territory, trade and power. Whether or not the colonies later would turn out to be valuable, losing the revolutionary war allowed the British imperial governments to then look at the rest of the world with freer resources and minds and compete and win against the rest of Europe.

Prior to the passage of the Tea Act of 1773, it was law that the East India Company could only sell tea at a particular auction in London. From there, it was sold to minor traders who themselves exported to america and the collective markups and taxes caused the price of British tea to be very high in the colonies. The patriots, who believed that without representation government is illegitimate, encouraged the colonists to buy smuggled dutch tea instead. This was both an economically rational act (the smuggled tea was much cheaper), and an act of protest against the lack of representation.
