Taxes aren't the only way a government influences the economy. Trump's tariff and capital control proposals could arguably have a far greater effect on Fortune 500 companies than higher taxes.

Whilst Sanders promises vast social expenditures not covered by the current tax revenue, Trump is in the same boat: he promises drastically lower taxes, without cutting necessary programmes. (Despite the US already running massive deficits, thanks to G. W. Bush).

Not to be pedantic, but the total national debt has gone from 10 point something trillion at the start of the Obama administration to 19 point something trillion today. While he inherited a recession and two wars Obama has not exactly shown fiscal discipline.
The elephants in the room are Social Security, Medicare, and interest on the debt, which take up approximately 60% of every tax dollar spent. Unfortunately Social Security reform is a radioactive topic since elderly voters are the most reliable voting block and neither party wants to piss them off by messing with social security (even if it's in the best interest of future retirees who are forced to participate in a dying system.)
A monkey throwing poop at a list of index funds would make picks that give better RoI than Social Security by orders of magnitude, why should I be forced to make bad investments?

You cant have a private education system and have the government pay for it. You either have completely tax-funded universities that are much cheaper, or you have a functioning market that provides prices that students can afford.
