The hyperbaric time chamber doesnt really come into play until Cell. During the Freiza arc, Goku spent a few episodes in a recovery tank cause his body was fucked up after fighting Captain Ginyu.
He also doesnt straight up lose to Freiza, just gets his ass kicked for a while until Freiza kills Krillin which triggers Super Saiyan.
