I've been thinking about that for awhile leafbro. I was talking with my psychologist earlier this week, and we realised that I haven't allowed myself to desire anything, because I had linked desiring things/wanting things with disappointment and suffering.

So at this point, I don't even really feel that I know HOW to want things. Whenever I try to imagine what it is I really, really want, I get... nothing, so I've been working on how to want things, and to allow myself to hope for/desire things.

It's been tough though. When I ask myself "what do I want", my first thought is that wanting things is overrated, and to ask: "Why I should want to do/have things in the first place?"

Previously humanity lived very close to malthusian limit of the population. But the once strong correlation between wealth and number of offspring has recently reversed for some unfathomable reason. Now the wealthiest populations which are leading in productivity are also dying out. Productivity still increases (like it did for thousands of years and will continue to do forever), but we're no longer pushing on the limit every step of the way, so thanks to all that spare productivity the wealthiest societies can afford a standard so high, some of the people aren't even required to work. Couple it with the malignant lack of interest in reproduction, and it turns out that those that don't work still live pretty decently.

Human reproduction always happened faster than productivity growth, so as long as you allow the primitives to settle in your wealthy societies, there is a chance they'll drag everyone back to the malthusian limit again, unless you manage to infect them with your sub-replacement fertility rate. But apparently it's not contageous, judging by what little I know about the immigrants in germany and their parallel worlds.

I'm going to stay in my comfy cabin in the mountains. I have a brook full of fish that runs through my 40 acre plot. I have deer, bears, rabbits, and game birds on my land. I have completed fencing and shed for my 5 goats. I made my first good cheese a month ago. My hens are content and laying eggs like crazy. My garden was excellent this year. I have been teaching myself black smithing on top of my carpentry skills. I make stained glass and wood carvings. I write and I paint and I walk my property. Visitors come to my place and I teach them local foraging for root plants, mushrooms and other wild edibles. I make my living working at a small local hospital. I know most people in my community. I think I'm doing just fine.

Religion only seems to do well when people are exposed to the ruthless nature of nature, perhaps as a defence mechanism. If we stopped bombing them back to the stone age, their lives would become cushier and Islam would have less of a grip over them.
