Just an anedocte, but i know many people who just don't want to have kids because this country is just horrible and it wouldn't be fair to the kids to be born on it.
I don't know the actual reason, but i wouldn't be surprised if unhappines was causing it despite the country being third world.

We just had the same cultural progression as every other country. Soap operas were a symptom. Pretty dumb thing to point out, you must really have a low opinion of the Brazilian people.

Cause we send shitloads of money to help "develop" Africa. Problem is the Africans are used to having kids die, hence their high child birth rate, what they're not used to is the kids living though childhood due to decent access to food and medicine.

Urbanization and development kills fertility. Kids were your retirement plan in the old days on the countryside. First, mechanized agriculture cut the need for kids substantially. After that socialized pension plans for farmers kicked in. Meanwhile, people were forced into factories and later they migrated into cities on their own. Oh, and women were encouraged to take up work, so fertility rates went down even further.
