I only play about once a week. I don't like multiplayer games so I can't recommend any of those.

People always talk about Raw Data and Onward. Haven't tried either.

I like Neon Arcade because I can wire up emulators inside the game and make my own arcade cabinets. Tried Pool Nation, but multiplayer just results in the other person filling the table full of shit when you try to play. Rec Room is also a multiplayer game that is free, but too many dumbasses and never really did anything.

Favorite games so far The Lab (free), Hot dogs, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades (video above), Out of Ammo is also pretty fun. Most of my playing time is in Audioshield. Most of the orbs in that game don't really line up to a beat or anything, but I like it for whatever reason. Holopoint and HoloBall are also pretty decent, but you likely need to replace the straps on the remotes before playing these unless you want the strap to break and go through a TV. I put Wii straps on mine.

Chair in a Room is also kind of neat, but buggy as fuck. Space Pirate Trainer is also fun as a wave shooter, but I suck at it.

I own an Oculus Rift DK1, but was thinking of getting a Vive when the prices finally drop, but this has made me reconsider. Would love to support Oculus.

The primary problem that VR is currently facing is the price. When the Oculus was first announced, the promise was that the final retail product would cost about $300. Now it costs almost three times that.
The other problem is that the current VR sets are first gen. The resolution still leaves a screendoor effect, there's a severe lack of games, and you're still tethered to your computer with cables.

I'm guessing VR will take off in Gen 2 or 3, which I assume would yield the following improvements:
- Lower price
- Higher resolution
- Wireless
- More games

I'm also guessing that future headsets will be smaller and eventually become portable, something that will let them work with smart phones when the hardware becomes powerful enough.

More games could come really easily if devs when making their game ask themselves "Can we support a VR camera?".
There's actually a mod for the Dolphin emulator so you can play Gamecube and Wii games using the Vive, and it lets you take control of the camera. It's a bit buggy, but it works really well.

Two years ago, I tried playing HL2 on my Oculus DK1, and despite how primitive it is compared to the commercially released VR sets, it really was an amazing experience. I'm surprised they don't integrate VR into more existing FPS games. It worked perfectly with HL2. All it requires is independent head movement. Keyboard and mouse works just fine for directional movement and aiming.

It's much better on the Vive than it was on the DK2 or DK1, the main thing I notice is the normally quite low render resolution. If you super sample even 1.5x it gets way better.

That's mainly limited by GPU performance if anything. If you crank it up to 4K you're going to be essentially rendering a scene twice, warping it twice, merging the image, and pushing it to the display. SLI/Crossfire already is bottle necked by the CPU in this instance. Maybe in a few more GPU generations, but it'd need heavy firmware support from all VR devs.

Latency is huge because we have to heavily compress images before sending them and decompressing them takes a lot of time. I don't see normal radio methods working (it's going to be using the same frequency band as wifi and shit like microwaves are going to heavily fuck with it), maybe an upgraded light info transfer system might work ala Lighthouse. Honestly VR started out looking interesting, but they took it out of the oven before it was done. Way way WAY before that.

You know how all the VR games have no proper controls? You need to point somewhere to teleport because no VR dev cared enough to implement an actual functional control scheme for movement that actually feels right.

Right now it's basically just cool monitor goggles with motion tracking for the head (and the hands for some). It's absolutely not viable for any real gameplay because you're surrendering the two state-of-the-art control schemes (controller + kb/m) for motion tracking and two buttons.

Pretty close. I'd say it's closer to Wii U. Wii actually did change the industry (for better or worse) because it came with this idea to being halfway decent motion control to a major console. It worked well because, at the beginning, devs had some pretty different and cool ideas which could have lead to different genres of games. The problem came up when they tried to force PS360 types games on much weaker hardware and tried to make Wii into something it wasn't meant to be. Then the image of the Wii got fucked up, Nintendo has the negotiating power of Hillary Clinton with 3rd parties, Wii Motion Plus should have came out with the Wii in 06 (but Nintendo was more than ready to kill off the Gamecube), and a bunch of other dumb moves from the top.

When i put the oculus rift on me, five years ago, i instantly knew it would flop.
The thing is heavy and slips off your face unless you tighten it beyond any comfort.
The display can be as high resolution as it will, it will never be enough as you cut the resolution in half for each eye, and most of the pixels go off to the side anyway, so you are left with a 2000'th nokia phone resolutions pasted on each eye.
The depth feels fake and can never be realistically simuated as no one have the same eye's.
The whole thing reeked of failure from the very start.
But they kept going.
And now they've launched.
I don't know the exact figures but i'm going to do a quick estimate of lower than the initial estimate by htc and facecrook.
Which is only going to get worse.
I wouldn't hope for a vive 2 any time soon.
No matter how much money valve pumps in to supporting it.

is it not enough if you can use it to replace your monitor? if you're in a cramped space, or constantly on the move, or whatever other reason you may have to want a portable perhaps cheaper (in the future) monitor. it will be a neat gimmick in combination with the standard mouse and keyboard, i sure hope nobody thinks this will be actual vr.

Vive is the superior product so I can see it beating Facebook, especially when you need a high end rig to run a HMD and the people who have that tend to not be as into Facebook.

I think PSVR will be able to compete if what you need to run Occulus is some high end piece that will cost you around $1000, and more if you buy a prebuilt. (Which the average consumer will gravitate towards.)
