The problem is that kids at all ages always strive for independence and automation, so they don't come to their parents for guidance on things that puzzle them, because they don't have to; they have the Internet and friends who use the Internet to learn from and form opinions from them because children are still extremely malleable, it's just Buzzfeed telling them that cops are racist instead of parents offering their personal life experience.

So OP (and anyone else going through similar situations) don't fret. Just do your best to relate to your kids. It may seem difficult at first because teenagers naturally want to rebel from their parents, but in the end they're almost exactly like you and even if they don't receive your message at the time, it's a pretty safe bet that when they get older they'll reflect on a lot of things you've taught them. But they can't ever have those moments if you don't offer it in the first place and instead elect to defer all of their teaching to public schools and their peers.

I think you'd have to explain to them why to avoid training them to use violence as a cure-all problem solver. A child doesn't understand consequences fully, so a spanking must be followed up with a simple but effective explanation of exactly why that behavior led to the punishment, and perhaps even an explanation of what the punishment in the real world would be.
