The parties back then were just starting to form cultures. For the longest time what divided the Dems and the Republicans was class (Lower and Upper classes respectively). So, it was entrely possible to have Reagan or LBJ like elections where they practically sweeped the entire nation. NH has a reputation for being a swing state, but has admittedly been trending blue recently due to demographic shifts. Maine and Michigan are solid blue, on the other hand.

According to 538 (yeah yeah, I know), NH has the highest chance of going red among the remaining blue states, which would be just enough for Trump to win according to the current electoral map. I'm not saying that it will happen, but if any blue-ish state were to flip at this point, it would be NH.

I visited Maine to see some extended family. It's like a giant "white people" ghetto. Shitty, broken down cars, Section 8 housing, everyone on food stamps.
