I have Asperger's. My childhood was a mix of "what a smart, well-read, polite, handsome little man!" and "why isn't this kid in special ed?"

Asperger's is basically is basically all the spaghetti green texts you've ever read, except without realizing you were dripping spaghetti until afterwards. But the thing is, if you're raised right, by adulthood you're pretty much indistinguishable from anyone else. Maybe a little more quirky, but in the insane socially retarded environment most young adults are in now, it's hardly noticeable.

tl;dr, Asperger's sucks as a kid, but through practice you can overcome it to the point where you're perfectly normal.

When I was a kid, I was unable to even understand why what I was doing was wrong, but now I find I'm not much worse than other people at socializing. Most people these days have children in their mid to late 30s, whereas not so long ago people used to have kids in their 20s when it was much easier to get a house and a job that could pay for it. That's interesting. Maybe a lot of the autistic traits we exhibit are a result of leftover childhood trauma or conditioning. I fit all of the descriptions of autism, but when I think back my parents made me feel unwanted for most of my life which made me socially isolate myself because I believed they had made the right assessment.

Inability to make eye contact, obsession with solitary pursuits, general shyness and anxiety around people you don't know. What many of us self diagnose as autism might just be a shit upbringing. You could probably attest that it's hard to pull yourself out of this state by yourself.

i do believe a lot of people diagnosed with aspergers (and autism now with aspergers not being a diagnosis anymore) were merely abused as children.

when i think about my upbringing, i realize a lot of it was out of my control. if i left the situation entirely i would have been hunted down and picked up by the police, child services wouldn't have given a shit, nobody would have trusted my word over my father's. i couldn't have stopped it, even if i tried.

i didn't even know it was seen as wrong. i was born into it and beaten when i even started to consider that maybe something wasn't right.

i started to see myself as deeply faulty in some way. i could never put my finger on it but i had a deep seated belief. my body language was perpetually depressed, i didn't talk much, i avoided eye contact and causing a fuss (a carryover from the days when the best way to not get hit was to just not be noticed).

if my twin didn't pull me out of that hole, i probably would have kept hating myself. it certainly wasn't easy to recover from either.

any child that is being diagnosed with aspergers should have a full blown family examination done at the same time. i can't exactly remember how my diagnosis went (mainly because i was 4), but i'm pretty sure i can predict how it went:

Consider a group setting, you're not going to want to contribute to the conversation or offer a witty remark even if you have a good one because you feel deeply afraid of what might happen, even if there's no actual danger. Though you desperately want to say it, there's a lingering inhibition that makes you just stay quiet.

Meeting new people becomes nearly impossible because you think they'll just have the same assessment of you as your parents or caretakers did. You feel worthless even if you have the upper hand from a social hierarchy point of view.

You find some solace by keeping to yourself, maybe you get an interest in something traditionally considered autistic like computers and electronics, and you just divert all of your attention to acquiring as much knowledge as you possibly can. It becomes a form of escapism from your own self hatred.

It's good to hear that you've pulled yourself out of this hole. The longer you live your life that way, the harder it is to convince yourself that your own thoughts might be working to sabotage your ability to be a normal, functioning human being.

Extreme laziness (to the point where it is ruining my life.) I failed college because of this. I wouldn't do any out of class stuff. Barely showed up to class. I could take tests and retain the info just fine.

I don't care how I live or what I eat. I would rather just eat the raw ingredients of something than bother making something. I could eat raw pasta for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the rest of my life for all I care. The only things I don't eat are fish, mayo, cream shit, most fruits, most veggies. I have the taste buds of a 7 year old. Eating that stuff makes me want to throw up.

I have no conscious care for social relationships.

I do weird shit like pacing around when talking to people. Fiddle with nick nacks when I'm bored (a pool ball will keep me entertained for weeks). A week ago I was just walking around at home waiting for my pile of french fries in the microwave to finish and I just walked into the corner of the room. I was in control the whole time and I wanted to do it.

When I was little I was tested because I would only interact with my Dad and was extremely un-social. Now I can go weeks and even months without going outside or talking to a real person. Btw my family still thinks I'm going to college and I live with them. I would have friends in real life, but I never go outside because I'm too lazy
