In some ways twitter/facebook/myspace etc. are like TV. You have control over what you watch and give your time to but it is programming nonetheless. This would be less dangerous to impressionable minds if it were not available on handheld devices like smartphones. It is the smartphone that is the true enemy here because it facilitates these platforms. We are currently in uncharted territory and for those paying attention it is quite alarming. Society has been changed in a way that is difficult to reverse if not impossible.
