I live in NYC and just a week in a different state makes me miss it. Being able to walk about the entire island in five hours or less is fucking amazing for a busy city. No street is ever "too far" when doctor's appointments, work, or meet ups matter because I can pretty much be there in a max time of an hour and a half. And those are on slow train ride days.

There's always something to do, there's always something open, I can always "get what I need" regardless of time. I need to get a new mouse at four in the morning so I went out and a bought a mouse. It's impossible to get lost, just go back to 34th or 42nd and you'll always be fine. I can go my entire life without ever once getting a driver's license.

How far the internet has come in the past decade have made petty shit like just ordering pizza a fucking breeze, do people even know of mypizza.com? It's basically a yelp just for major city pizzas and it blew my mind when I first discovered it because I'm such a lazy asshole. I have the option of either being extremely friendly with my neighbors or ignoring them altogether and never once experiencing any "dirty looks" because of life style choices I make. I went to a convention in some little town in Jersey and old women sneered at me when I was walking down to the center in a costume. I decided to wear a costume randomly to work one random spring day and the only people who looked at me were people who thought it was fun I was dressed up as a cartoon character.

These are just little perks that when built up, make shit just like... Not exciting, I guess, but definitely relaxing. You definitely miss all these little tiny conveniences when you leave.

If I wanted to be social, NYC would probably be even better, but I chose to stay indoors 90% of the time and still enjoy it.

Japan is nothing like your shitty childrens cartoons portray it. They've got some... severe cultural issues, but then again, so does the west.

Personally, I really, really hope Japan remains stoic with respect to its immigration policies. Japan will have a hard time in the coming years due to their aging population, however once that has passed, they'll be able to maintain a very high standard of living, by virtue of the fact that they're hardworking, and law abiding people in a racially homogeneous society.

I can't say I know too much of Japanese history, or that I intimately know their culture. That being said, from what I do know, I have nothing but respect for them. Like I said, they do have some cultural issues, like salarymen, their low birth rates, etc, however these can all be overcome. They have the potential to become a great, racially homogeneous society, and although I would never have a place there, there is something fulfilling about seeing a respectable society with great potential, reach that potential.

I dunno, I like to think that I'm pretty good because programming is one of my major hobbies that I spend most of my free time doing. But, I've never had any formal training or education, nor do I have a decorated github or whatever normie programmer SNS is trending these days. I know I'm better than a lot of the crappy pleb programmers at work, but that's only apparent after getting hired.

One thing you have to realize about programming in Japan is that you automatically outclass pretty much everyone else solely by being able to read stackoverflow. I can't count how many times I've caught otherwise brilliant programmers reinventing wheels because they can't find existing answers on stackoverflow because they don't know how to phrase the problem correctly in English. If you can copy paste off of stackoverflow you will immediately surpass all the Japanese only peasants, and the skilled programmers will realize you're an asset and start giving you the difficult problems instead of boilerplate. So the only real challenge is getting that first job I guess, for which I would reckon knowing Japanese is the most important factor. So basically you probably don't have to know shite about programming.

I spent a semester in Fukuoka, and the first 2-3 months were "Wow, a skyscraper next to the beach!" but then after seeing it everyday it just becomes part of the scenery and you forget it exists. It's the same way in tokyo. If you spend too much time there then it stops becoming special.

Unfortunately there isn't anything close to the level of what's available in English. I'm strongly against copy paste programming and using code that you don't understand. But being able to pick up a random language or tool that you've never used before, google for something like for example "loop over data structure X in language" or "recursive regex replace with library", and immediately get a detailed answer, quickly makes it look like you know "every" language, when everyone else are stuck trawling through the private blogs of random Japanese autists. Honestly most of the time the deciding factor for what tool or library to use ends up being how much Japanese documentation is available.

I did this but in Korea. Public school too so I got cozy pay and hours with free rent. Pretty neat job for a year or two but I've never met someone who can do this as a career. It's more of a career pause to travel. I'd recommend it for that. Then learn something in demand. Maybe they'd fawn over you if you learn Jap and Mandarin.

Day care will work you at odd, after school hours and weekends and those guys definitely want to squeeze your money's worth. Public sector is cozy and guaranteed pay and like any other public sector in the first world, inefficient. You definitely benefit from public because you have so much time set aside for travel and in the case of Korea, every year they take you to somewhere in Korea to experience the country even if you're doing that yourself already. I was lucky enough that they sent us to Jeju island for a few days.

I don't know much about teaching in Japan but I'm guessing same story with private vs public. A rule of thumb: with public you work public hours so whenever the public has a holiday, you do too. Whenever the public union says you leave work, you do too. There is no incentive to stay long hours because amount of time doesn't correlate with profit.

Far East women are not all the same. As someone mentioned in this thread Korean women want the appearance of "purity" before a few drinks. From what I've seen, the Korean women that did race mix were seen as undesirable from other Koreans, even if they were attractive. There was "something off" about them.

I've seen race mixers in Japan but I got the feeling that the locals thought they were weird or silently judging them. I saw a google and jap (woman) couple with a kid and the crowds avoided them with subtlety.

There wasn't a lot of race mixing in Hong Kong but from what the ones I saw, no one really cared. It was usually white man with china girl. There are googles but didn't see them race mix. The women there are definitely more independent and nonsubmissive than Korean or Japanese women.

And yes, China is the place where they appreciate western science degrees but the downside is, it's China. You will encounter a DESIGNATED floor at one point.

I have a CELTA, the highest form of teaching English cert you can have. Getting one takes a full, 9-5 month. For Korean public schools, CELTA gets you to the top of the application pile. I'm guessing it's the same elsewhere too. Certified teachers, like Bachelor's of Ed, gets you there too but that's overkill to teach English.

The opportunity came to me from my CELTA instructor who regularly gets recruiters looking for CELTA grads. People do get jobs from Dave's but you're also competing against everyone who read that job ad.
