Yes, he is not considered a natural born citizen because he was not born on US soil. If he had been born in America, in a territory, or on a military base and to two American parents he would be eligible (at least according to the 18th century view, today and even when he was born he would need only one American parent). The technicality Cruz pursued was a law passed (IIRC a bit before or after the turn of the 19th century) that would have him considered as a natural born US citizen but that law was only temporarily able to grant citizenship, after the period in which a person could be considered a natural born citizen under that law expired, the law had already served its purpos and Cruz missed the boat by over a century and a half.

To win an election stacked against you in terms of demographics, you need bluster like Trump. Regular conservatism is already dead and will never win an election again - too many minorities for that. Rather than appealing with policy - which Trump has never done beyond the vaguest of statements, promises and demands - the only remaining way to get a non-Democratic president into the office is to mobilize nonvoters and those just fed up with the establishment.

Another thing. This is not a brag point. You only get "the most primary votes in history" if there is reason to have more primaries than previously. Trump had to go deep into the schedule to secure the required number of delegates, and there are more primaries now over the caucuses which used to predominate.
