Herbal medicine is a lot less effective than modern chemistry, but it still works. Every society smart enough to objectively test and judge the properties of a plant can do it. A lot of drugs are or WERE derived from plants anyway.

It depends. A lot of plants have a cocktail of different oils and compounds while synthesized drugs are carefully measured. Certain synthesized drugs are more effective than their components, like sassafras oil can become MDMA, but as a general rule they just have fewer ingredients and the effect on your body is narrower in scope. You don't have to worry quite as much about adverse reactions, drug interactions, side effects, etc.

I'm mostly meaning traditional methods as herbal remedies, not just natural oils distilled from dried plants. That's a modern technique using our modern equipment and knowledge of chemistry. Obviously rubbing, eating, water infusions, alcohol/oil extracts, poultices, inhaling, and burning are all going to be vastly lower doses than modern techniques. That's mostly what I mean.

For the consumer, buying gel caps with essential oils isn't going to be too different from buying any other pills, either in price, convenience, or application. Boiling herbs at home is going to be extremely different. So yeah, you're right but also that's a different subject.

Spiced mead or a melomel can be very, very good. If you know somebody who brews I'd definitely recommend it, but don't bother at a liquor store. I can't in good conscience recommend something so expensive for just a "pretty good" result.

It's a good, if expensive, lesson if you start brewing yourself. It's very simple to make. Way easier than beer or wine and using modern air locks and siphons you can get a great result for minimal effort.
