Parents divorced when I was like 8 years old. Mother stayed in town until I was 16 and then moved south to enjoy the nice weather. Visited her once a year for a week over mother's day.

A week before mothers day she calls me up and tells me not to worry but she's sick and she doesn't know all the details. Couple of days later she tells me it's leukemia and that she's starting chemo. She's known for awhile but waited to tell me. She wants some doo rags for her mother's day gift because she's going to lose all her hair. I buy a few hats and head dressings and book a flight.

Get to see her in her hospital room on mother's and she seems fine. She says the hospital food sucks and she got the approval for us to bring in outside food so she wants some fried chicken. Go get some fried chicken and start watching some shitty game shows with her and talk. Half hour into our chat she sneezes really hard and blows her nose. Didn't think much of it.

Fifteen minutes later she wants to get up and piss some blood. She can barely walk and is starting to have speech problems. We call the nurse and they perform some eye tests then rush her off to the ICU. Turns out when she sneezed it caused a blood vessel in her brain to rupture and now she's slowly bleeding out into her brain. By this point the chemo had reduced her platelet count so low that it couldn't clot anymore and I spent the rest of that mother's day waiting for my mother to die. My sister and I made the call to take her off life support at 6 A.M. the next day after being shown some brain scans.

To be fair, most provinces in Canada require you to pay before fillup, and even here in Alberta where it isn't mandatory most stations have it in effect either all the time in high-crime areas, or past a certain time at night.
