Bison hooves aerate soil and their shit is great fertilizer. Meanwhile domestic cows pound the ground flat, overgraze, and their shit isn't as good for grasslands.
Another example: otters eat urchins, and urchins eat kelp. without otters urchins would destroy kelp. Kelp makes a fuck ton of oxygen and is a major biome for other creatures.
