I hate to ruin my dub streak, but I hope I'm wrong.
I can already picture ICANN's replacement taking down offensive domain names.
Sure, there's Tor and Freenet, but the common person won't bother, and will be driven away since it is heavily associated with child porn.
There is no easy solution to get to the masses if it happens.
That might be for the best though, the internet of the 90s and early 00s had some good information. Now it is like searching through a sea of piss.
So, we have Tor, Freenet, and possibly a large Meshnet if enough people got interested and a way was found to link the (Potentially) thousands of networks that are out of range of each other.
Some kind of cheap IoT device could get people into it and help expand the meshnet. We already have very cheap wifi chips, like the ESP8266 ($5) and the newer ESP8285.
Again, range is an issue. Can't just stick them anywhere, I doubt a battery would last long under heavy load, and I have no idea how big a solar panel would need to be to keep the battery charged.
Actually, I just remembered something. It is possible to build a highly directional wifi antenna with several mile range.
You take an old satellite dish, preferably the old, giant fuckoff kind, add in an antenna (Possibly home made, a little math involved), and sight it in.
Could be a way to link towns/different meshnets together. Might need a telescope to sight it in properly though. I made one years ago back when I lived with my parents innawoods and all we had was dialup, it worked but the number of trees around made it impossible to get a signal.
I used a biquad antenna I made out of some old wire and shit I had laying around, and an ancient giant sat dish.
Also, holy fuck. Just looked up the world record, the old one of 7 miles was broken.
New record is 237 miles. This is starting to sound like something feasible.
