If Chirac was so after lebanese independence he should get out of that country at first and try his best to make Israel do so. Russia is trying to gain influence and leverage in Syria so it can persuade European countries and the US to ease on the sanctions for Ukraine.
A nice side effect is that Russia can at will increase the amount of refugees fleeing from syria into europe by managing where rebels can go/get pushed towards.
It also gives Russia prestige because they are one of the few countries (if not the only one) except the US capable of conducting military operations over seas without uncle sam's help and that they also support their allies (Syria)

1). Russia did not invade Syria, it was invited by the lawful government to help against "moderate terrorists".
2). It were the western globalists who invaded Syria, after they invaded and destroyed Iraq, Lybia, and tried to overthrow governments of Egypt and Turkey.
3). The globalists depose progressive (for the Middle East, that is) dictators to put Al Quaeda, Al Nusra, ISIS and other terrorists in their stead. They do so as proxies of Israel, so it wouldn't have any powerful rival states in the region while establishing Greater Israel.
4). Their other goal is to empower terrorist organizations in the region and explode other countries, including Iran, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and others. When terrorists take them over, they can infiltrate and attack Russia and eventually China as western globalists' proxies. The globalists probably think this way Russia and China won't nuke the west, and besides, guerilla war tactics that the terrorists use allows for the war to last indefinitely, weakening the victims, dissecting them and genociding their people for decades or even centuries.
5). Russia doesn't want to be invaded and continuously genocided by the western globalists' terrorist proxies. Neither does China and Iran. So they support the lawful gov. of Assad in Syria against the west's terrorist proxies. Russia even agreed to land military aid to the Syrian government against the terrorists supported by the west.
