I worked with four Army Special Forces (green berets) ODA teams and they also have very few minorities. I've seen an Indian, plenty of Hispanics, and one black person. The rest were white and overwhelmingly redneck.

I was at BUD/s. I can't speak for other spec ops just SEALs. Why not so many black SEALs? Low non qualifying ASVAB scores disqualify most blacks and the ones who do can't swim. Out of a class of 300 starting I only remember 2 black guys. A handful of Hispanic dudes the rest all white.

Ask any navy vet what happened to black people during 3rd class swim qual in boot camp.

You tend to find more minorities in Army SOF than air force or navy

Delivered SEALS, EOD, Reocn, all types everyday for years, trainign and hot ops.
Lived, partied, traveled and worked with all.
Some are great friends still, thru weddings divorces kids and careers.

I went to high school with a guy who joined the Navy and became a SEAL. He didn't do sports in school, he didn't swim all the time. He was kind of a slim athletic build like Mick Jagger.

Most SOF require high GT scores.

Just about every SOF selection includes back ground checks, IQ tests, Psych tests, 1 on 1 interviews and team work phases.

If were talking black dudes, most fail because of prior history with crime or disputes failing them as a candidate.

If they do pass selection they end up failing somewhere in a qualification course because of swim tests or they get peered low.

Some make it through and when they do they are definitely not your average black guy.

I was in 2/75 Ranger Regiment. At the time this was around 640 Rangers in the Battalion.

We had 5 blacks. 3 of whom were cooks. We did have a black Battalion Sergeant Major.

We were (from my memory) around 5% Mestizo with another 5% being white dudes with Spanish surnames.

It really comes down to ____ simple qualities that strongly discriminate against blacks and hispanics making the cut.

Most of the blacks couldn't keep up on the runs in RIP (selection course) which is now RASP. If you run slower than a 7-minute mile for 6-12 miles you won't make it. Same with the weekly 15-mile road marches at sub 15-minute pace. They just couldn't keep up due to lack of stamina.

You are treated like shit through your selection phase. Any attitude is an immediate drop. You are verbally and physically abused and tormented. So they eventually talk shit, get hit, and were Article 15'ed out of the unit.

But back to the topic, being tall in BUD/s and being tall in general in the SEAL teams is actually more of a disadvantage than advantage. I was reading Breaking BUD/S and they said that almost all of the guys who were 6'2"+ DOR'd. This was mainly due to the fact that they weighed much more and thus had to put in more effort since they would be carrying much more weight while doing runs with boats on their heads or doing log PT. Height is actually very impractical when it comes special forces, and physical training in general.

Also, I was not claiming 5'10" was "tall", I was implying that is was average and shouldn't be criticized. It's a height that people in the real world are indifferent to; they don't think you're tall nor short.

Damn near all SEALs shut up about it, only like 5 former SEALs spilled the beans (Marcus Luttrell, Mark Owen, Robert O'Neill, Brandon Webb, Kristin Beck (look him/her/whatever up) and a few others) and now there's a bunch of information on them. These people have been ostracized by much of the SEAL community for breaking their ethos. I've met a few seals and they were the most humble people I have ever met. They didn't put a trident on their car to show off like how some people put a marines bumpersticker on their car or the Ivy League school they went to. That's not what their concerned with and that's not why they joined. They didn't join to accept praise or for the glory, they did it because they wanted to be apart of the elite and do elite stuff. It's a shame that the poor actions of a few ruined the obscurity of the entire unit.

In a previous job I worked as a civilian contractor alongside of a variety for US and foreign special forces groups in training for parajump operations.

By far the most minorities that I saw were with USSFG/ODA. They were also the biggest fuck ups. We referred to them as the 'Special Needs Forces'. Rarely a day would go by when one of them didn't fuck something up. Coincidence that they have the most minorities and also screwed up the most? Maybe. Or maybe it's just the Army way.

The top guys that I worked with by far were the USAF EOD, USN SEALs, and the Dutch special forces. Those guys were on top of their shit, day in and day out. Like clock work.

Danish special forces guys were bros and way laid back.

New Zealand special forces guys were using equipment that we stopped using decades ago. They were basically the poor kids with the hand me downs. I almost felt bad for them.

The German KSK and German Airborne Schools were a huge fucking pain in the ass. Would fuck something up and then believe it was someone elses mistake and throw a huge fit. They also all smelled fucking awful. Big time complainers.

I got my German wings in the late 90s and they were excellent company, but I found them far too easy going. Same with the Dutch and Norweigans.

There was basically no difference between the junior ranks and the SNCOs, nor was there much of a difference between the collected ranks and the officers. I mean that in the sense of responsibility, command and role. They all just worked like ants, together and roughly the same.

In regard to the OP, the swim test will get most of them. Being a strong swimmer isn't enough, you also need to show a great deal of aptitude in various situations involving water. I'm a decent enough swimmer and I'd struggle with it.

There's a tendency to believe that these people are intrinsically good and are an authority on anything military related. They're human, at the end of the day, and they're as prone to telling lies, making things up, exaggerating, screwing people over and engaging in cuntery as the rest of us.

For instance, I found nearly every American I had to work with an absolute pleasure. Some of them were lacking in certain areas, but 99 percent of the time they were excellent company, great to have around and good fun. They were as professional as we were, and I'd have gladly taken any of them on if I had to for whatever reason.

Meanwhile, there was a former 22 SAS officer who was of the opinion that all Americans were idiots due to time he had spent with select numbers of them in the 80s and 90s. That was his opinion, but if you put his resume next to mine he looks a lot more qualified and people would take it as fact. Even though what he's said about the subject isn't true.

The training is most likely either just as hard as SEALs or a little less. You can't really do much more strenuous training without hurting yourself then you can in BUD/s. The difference between regular SEALs and Delta operators probably has to do more with experience and skill rather to toughness.

Considering they have about a 95 percent failure rate from men with years of experience and usually a tour under their belt already, compared to the SEALs which has a lower failure rate with men off the street, I'd say you're a bit wide of the mark.

The biggest difference of delta and devgru is that delta has a selection course and devgru doesn't. Richard marcinko even commented that he regretted not having a proper selection course for devgru they just have the operators course called green team.

The biggest difference is that the SEALs are firmly part of the Navy. They're Navy men, they love the Navy, the Navy loves them and they like to do everything with a Navy flavour. They have calendars, give interviews, have lifting competitions in forward operating bases and so on.

DELTA, on the other hand, hold a similar position to the British Regiment they're based on. They have the same structure and roles (minus the nuclear thing). They've also gone through the same, being completely misunderstood by the rest of the Army and have suffered under attempts to be absorbed into the rest of airborne forces. No one is really sure what to do with them, but they're very good at what they end up doing so that's that. Most of them look like substitute geography teachers and have probably never entered a gym in their lives, because you can't heli-ski in the gym.
