I can't say much about the topic, other than I can only assume that his methods were not exactly seen as "Devout". His belief could parallel that of newton's; what is, is because of god. He applied science to the aspects of his religion, versus following it blindly.
Just because he follows a religion doesn't mean he is devout in the eyes of the average believer. I highly doubt questioning or attempting to understand god (especially in Islam) is moral. But like I said, I have no idea.
