Ah, I think I understand where you're coming from. Most of my ancestors emigrated to the US in the late 1800s - early 1900s and are largely of German or Polish stock. I'm 3rd - 4th generation American born and consider myself "American" even though my family hasn't been here since the colonial era.

You "become American" by living here, assimilating into our society, and adopting our values as your own. It's just something that happens over time once you get here.

I've never had anyone break into my home. I'd grab my gun and take whatever course of action I deem necessary at the time whether that be scaring them away, detaining them and waiting for the police, or shooting to kill. It all depends on the circumstances really.

Yeah, Japanese Kanji are mostly just borrowed / recycled Chinese characters, many of them have the same basic meaning behind them too. If I ever finish learning Japanese then that should, in theory, make learning Chinese easier because I'd already have a shitload of characters memorized. Mandarin is just a shit-show of a language like you said though what with how words have a completely different meaning just by changing a tone or inflection... Cantonese is even worse with like 2x as many tones/inflections.

It'd certainly be a useful language but I don't ever see myself dealing directly with Chinese companies, traveling to China, or wanting to view / read Chinese media so I think I'll pass on Mandarin.

Texan here, Mexican food confirmed for great-tier. Whether it's Tex-Mex or traditional Mexican cuisine it's all delicious. The old Mexican lady who lives across the street from me brings me a dozen homemade tamales every time she makes a big batch up, some of the best tasting food I've ever eaten.

Indeed, tamales are great, like most of our solid food. What i hate are stews and soups (like pozole).

I dunno man, my friend's dad is from New Mexico and makes pozole using wild pig meat and green chiles and that shit is pretty good. He's a white guy though so I'm not sure how Americanized the recipe he uses is compared to traditional Mexican pozole.
