I'm a high school dropout because I got CCNA and A+ certified in high school and just left and got work doing hardware and server work (maintenance, board swaps, imaging and QC shit) and finally have almost 3 years experience under my belt. Took a while at first though, I only had sparse contract work for the first 4-5 years and I certainly had gaps in my IT work and worked as a meat cutter between what I wanted.

My pay isn't that good at all for what I'm doing now but I have zero debt and my own place. IT certs are one of those things that are cheap to get and one of the best do-it-yourself educational paths at the moment. Even if you don't end up using it in IT, looks really good on resumes to show that you have them.

Then, I quit that job, and as a vet, not only school was free, but tuition as well.

6 months into college I got picked up by a Fortune 500 company that pays my entire tuition, gave me a 6 figure salary, union protection and coverage, and 10k bonus for every level of degree I get.

It is fucking possible. I'm still doing it. I work 70 god damn hours a week and 15-20 extra at school. It is hard, and I am tired. But I fucking grind because fuck our peer group that wants the Instagram life buying shit they don't need with money they don't have to impress people they don't like.

Get your head and your ass wired together, go work at McDonald's, and stop by a community college and spin them the biggest sob story you've ever gushed.

Get an operative CSCS card (ask the job center that you want one) OP you'll have work coming out the arse in construction as a labourer even if you don't drive and you will earn alright unless the expected recession hits (in which case a lot of jobs will be lost anyway). I work as a drylining labourer and I can earn £120 a day just from moving plasterboards into houses (that's not a day rate or hourly wage however its price meaning I get paid per amount of work), I learnt how to fix boards to ceilings and walls too but right now I am carless preventing me from getting my tools in otherwise I'd normally be on £140 - £200. I still live at home, my yearly surplus is at 87% of my income due to my share of the houses bills being so low. All of last year I was buying .1s and .2s of BTC every week when my money came in so I doubled my savings with that. With the rest I poured money into a few other little jewish schemes with the aims of building passive income. Hey there...I have a STEM degree and am currently working on my Network+ Certification and then after that I am going for the Security+. From some people I've talked to, they said to skip the A+ and just go straight for those two.

However, I have no IT background but I do have a year's experience working a computer job. The concepts seem easy but it is still a little strange since I haven't applied it before. Do you think this is the way to go or should I be doing something different?

It all depends on your immediate career goals. A+ is suited for hardware and basic operating system troubleshooting. If you've EVER USED A COMPUTER, you can get this cert. Net+/Sec+ are definitely the way to go, though. Sec+ can nab you a sweet federal gig or a contracting job that pays a shitload of money, but the tests for these certs are expensive if you pay out-of-pocket.

People usually have 16-20 hours of lessons or so before they sit the test, which involves a practical driving part which lasts for about 45 minutes and a computer based part that tests your situational awareness and the Highway Code (the rules of the road, what the signs mean etc.). The practical part will also test your three-point-turns, your reverse parking and shit that Americans don't need to worry about like hill starts (because by law, you must learn to drive a manual).

some of my colleagues have had very good experiences going through headhunters, the only downside being they were all required to move bretty far abroad for the good jobs they got offered, most of them advanced their careers that way but I guess that rings true for all foreign gigs if you're coming from such a small country as mine

To get federal grants for schooling you have to go full time which is 12 hours a week or more.

If you're going for a specific degree, then you could be taking 16-22 hours a week depending on your major. Because not only will you have to take the GenEd courses, but you'll have to take the actual courses themselves on top of the labs or courses that only give you 1 credit our (these are all mandatory).

I'm a physics undergraduate, and I'd be doing Astro for my graduate. I have to take chemistry along with the labs. The actual physics courses themselves along with the labs. Algebra, trig, geometry, and calculus, all the gen ed courses, and two fucking electives.

That's basically the job I had that I only worked a day (they even liked me) only to be laid off . At first it was just a case of they were moving to a new building down the street so they didn't need me yet but then it turned into yeah me (and prob others) couldn't be put in the budget or some other nonsense. You can do everything right only to be screwed over still. Jobs security doesn't exist anymore.

Claiming to work full time, or even overtime, while managing a full course load is common here. It doesn't hold up to meticulous scrutiny but it's claimed nonetheless.

Yeah that sucks man, their management sounds like shit anyways you probably wouldn't have liked it there in the end. For me it was a huge amount of luck, and running around helping the dockworkers with everything and asking for more work

I don't see how. It takes me 3 hours a night just to do my astronomy/physics homework. That's not including studying, other homework, papers, and social life.

Also, working 40 hours minimum wage here doesn't pay the bills. You'd have to work more. The job can't be too "draining" or it will affect my schooling.

Well the boss guy seemed nice hell he even let me go slightly early since he knew i wasnt used to the labor yet, and did want to see me successful it was something above him. But yeah I mostly just went around clearing wrapping/pallets/fixing stacks of items to be neater etc. I mean yeah I was exhausted but I felt I could get used to it and just was happy to have something finally that I felt could fit me. The hours were fine, I was mostly kept to myself, not too much concern about appearance (i mean within reason of course)
