Trump left so much on the table as far as what to attack Hilliary on. I really think that this was by design. They need enough material to hit hard over two more debates; and the media has, to some extent, been talking about those things that didn't come up. We might now have the average voter looking into those things that the media are puzzled about Trump having "left out" of the discussion. So in the next two debates when he brings up some bit of info from the 80s or 90s it might not just pass over the heads of the masses.

Also like you said, there was no meltdown. He wanted his expectations low going into this one, and he pretty much kept those level going into the next. With this experience he's going to hit hard next time. Stephen Bannon is a smart man.
