For the first time in history, this years election is being fought on the internet. While candidates in the past utilized the internet in small amounts, this years election is being fought almost entirely on the internet. If you can't win the internet, you can't win the election.
The internet is the one place that the media does not have control over- it's unfamiliar territory to them. It changes too fast for them to keep up.
So, who does control the internet? Cred Forums.
Cred Forums has an incredibly disproportionate amount of influence over the internet for its size. The problem is, who do you attack if you wish to attack Cred Forums trolls? Cred Forums users are all anonymous. They have no leader who is directing them to do things. They have no prominent members, no stated goals- nothing for the media to attack.
So the media has latched onto Pepe. It is the closest thing they could find to a "mascot" for the right-wing internet. It is the only thing they can take and make up lies about it being a racist symbol of hate, in order to discredit the internet right.
They will keep parading Pepe as the leader of the "alt-right", and keep portraying him as a racist calling-card for the alt-rights members.
It's the only thing they can do to discredit a largely anonymous group.
