Switching to clean energy will cost us nothing in quality of life. It's just a monetary investment, which is problematic in this capitalistic society where money is apparently the most important thing. Couple that with the fact that the oil industry is working against clean energy in every way they can and there is a lot of inertia to change away from fossil fuels. It all boils down to money and power though, not our quality of life.

In reality, it's hard to do anything because controlling oil means power and very few people that have power will be willing to relinquish some or all of that power for the greater good. These people need to be executed if they don't comply with making the world energy production greener.

They have huge maintenance cost attached to them as well, also the networking cost (you need a copper wire up the mountain to use your wind power). It's economically not feasible yet and pushing it with state spending won't make it better or more competitive, but worse. Give it another 10- 20 years and it will become more efficient when gas and coal become more expensive. If you subsidize it now, you'll find that when the cash runs out, we'll be burning car tires because maintenance costs are too high.
