You can call it a loophole or an abuse, but it is entirely legal. It was put in place to allow people like Trump to recover from ruin like Trump had. Many would say based on his use of it that the tax code was flawed. Here are the three basic points that Trump will use:

1. It is the imperative of any smart business to do what is best for that business. If a billionaire can get away with not paying taxes, that is a problem with the laws put forward by politicians, not with the businessmen.

2. A big part of Trump's tax plan is completely getting rid of loopholes like this, which he understands better than anyone. This gives him an opportunity to out Hillary as a liar when she goes after his tax plan, and to explain to people what it will actually do (not trickle down). He can point out that Hillary will never get rid of tax loopholes because her billionaire donors won't allow it.

3. The tax code that he took advantage of was signed by President Bill Clinton. If people don't like it, the last thing they should do is vote for another Clinton. Trump is the only one who will make it right. Hillary even said that she would put Bill in charge of the economy.

As dilbertman said on twitter, this is the absolute best return that could have been released, because it puts all of the others in context.
