They bought time for the Frenchmen in the Verdun Forts to prepare an effective defence, but at what a price.

Driant himself knew his position was hopeless and about to be overrun, so he conducted a fighting withdrawal. In the midst of this, he paused to give a fellow soldier a field dressing on his wound, when he was shot in the head and immediately died. Out of the 1,200 men of his batallion, only 118 managed to escape.

This was a high-ranking Colonel who fought valiantly alongside his men until the last minute, a man betrayed but unmoved by bureaucracy. The French are known to produce these types of brave fighting men. It is during the darkest of times and the dimming of fate that these types of men appear. France is not and will never be lost so long as men like Driant stand ready to defend it.
