Australia has preferential voting so you can vote for a third party yet still vote for one of the main two parties. In the US it's first past the post so if you vote fore a third party your vote is wasted.

For those who are interested, our current government is run by the liberals (voted at second) which formed a coalition with several smaller parties to become the majority. This means the smaller parties actually hold a huge amount of leverage and can vote on labors side if the liberals piss them off.

It's mostly an accident of our constitutional system. The combination of the Electoral College, separate legislative bodies and a separate executive and judicial branch all make it pretty much impossible for more than two parties to have power at any given time. The Founders didn't want political parties at all, but that's the way things shook out.

For non-Americans, our parties aren't like yours. The Reps and Dems are closer to two permanent coalitions akin to in your systems than actual parties.

The Republicans have evangelicals, fiscal conservatives, Libertarians, Mormons, Palecons and Neocons. Because our legislatures are representative and FPTP I can run as a "Republican" while only being a fiscal conservative, not an Evangelical. Even if Evangelicals make up the majority of Republicans (say the "Evangelical party" has 30% of the total electorate) they still have to listen to the minority groups (The other 20%) or else the Dems can steamroll them.

Because in the USA it is literally a wasted vote. Or worse, it is basically a vote for the party you don't want to win.
