This is an actually productive strategic assessment. Trump floundered and became defensive, he's been unable to make anything stick to Clinton since the debate, while she keeps hanging low bearing fruit that he eats into.

If he wants to win he has to put on his big boy socks, suck up Clinton's few attack lines and go after her instead. Don't talk shit about the next Ms. Universe, you give the issue more attention and worse; give Clinton more ammo for later.

At this stage though I don't think Pence is a strong enough orator or deeply enough into Trump's philosophy to provide the strong defense the campaign needs to stabilize on this debate. Pence needs to win, Trump then needs to win the final debate; both need to be exceptionally popular in terms of ratings, and at least one needs to be a crushing victory.

Whatever people think of the debate on a personal level, especially for Trump supporters, fact is Clinton's support went up in a lot of the states that will decide this election, shrinking the window by which Trump can get to 270.

Whether or not he is willing or even able to win the subsequent debates is what decides whether it's competitive or a blowout. He can win, but it's a long road from here to the White house for him.
