Never have I been more frustrated watching a film.

There are sequences that are so brilliant. The part where they're gambling, then it cuts to Barry fencing with the frog, and then it cuts to a landscape shot of them departing in the carriage. It's amazing.

But then there are so many shots that try desperately to have the static quality of painting, as in the image you posted, and to little effect. It's antithetical to cinema. Cinema is about motion and rhythm, and the best parts of the movie exploit this.

Oscars are a political game and there's a stupid amount of restrictions you have to meet to even be considered to be nominated. It's the same way many animations from Europe are also never considered.

Besides, the voting academy never watches the animation nominations anyway. They were exposed in showing that they basically just vote for Disney/Pixar or whichever movies their grandkids liked, or just abstained from voting because they think all animation is for kids and don't respect it as an art.

If on films, apart from Studio Ghibli I got two recommendations:

Patlabor: The Movie (1989). Slow paced thriller with plot twists and enjoyable for its story.
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000). Is looks like a classic vampire story well made, but unlike the western films it reaches the depths of story for each character, all while you get amazed by the rich world that is both post-apocalytic while resembling a pre-industrial era and preserving high tech.

I feel that anime is highly underrated. Perhaps is thanks to a few titles that the general public thinks is either childish or pornographic.
