It's a fun way to exercise being a dad before I have kids. I DM and serve as the patriarch of our DnD group. It's been instrumental in my development as a leader and as says it can be used as a microcosm of the way that real life works so it serves as playground for my different ideological stances.

D&D's experience HEAVILY varies depending on who's playing as well as DMing.
Stay away from autistic people when they want to DM. They are the most rigid assholes that refuse to let you go off the beaten path for even a second. And if they have a certain disgusting fetish, they will inevitably shoehorn it into the campaign somehow.
Also, if the DM has a girlfriend that plays, ABANDON SHIP. He will give her every single advantage in the dim hope that he gets pussy.
Avoid Edgy Chaotic Evil faggots too. They can't see past their fedoras to notice just how cringy they really are.

But if you get the right group together, HOLY SHIT it's a blast. Compounded with a really imaginative and loose DM, D&D is one of the best games out there, bar none.

I was like a total D&D poseur. I bought some expansion at the mall, hoping to jumpstart my D&D career, but I was too ADD to ever bother reading through it. There were these three brothers that played it, and the DM was totally maladjusted to school, and basically hated my guts.
Anyway I played like 4 times total in my life, and always felt like an inferior human around him. I always hated how I never bothered to learn how to set up and play the game with the kids in my own neighborhood.

I suggest not playing an over angsty character. I had fun with my evil Half Elf Oracle Rape Baby(see story above), but it easily could have slid into edgelord nonsense. Then again, she did try to gas Absalom
