The only positive use of democracy that The Founders recognized and why they adopted some aspects of democracy in the US system, was that it was a way of getting 'they consent of the governed' in governmental affairs. That is, they they needed a way of allowing the common citizen to participate and have their immediate interests heard and represented by those working as part of state or federal government. It was a small piece of the overall balance of powers that make up the entire system.

This was important at the time because the Monarchy was losing legitimacy as the ideal system of governance and so gave an opening for the anti-monarch revolutionaries to attempt alternative systems like the American republic or the French republic. Because, for all its faults, there is one thing the left do get right, and that is that any system needs to congruent with "the will of the people" at some deeper level. If your system is so outside what everyone else is willing to tolerate, then your system will fail. That is what caused the rift centuries ago that transformed the west into a hegemony of enlightenment inspired revolutionary leftism/liberalism. You cannot be at war with your own people, no system can work like that without degrading into essentially a non functioning system of despotism.

Unfortunately for the left, that is about the only thing that got right, and while democracy is historically the best system to use as a proxy for "the consent of the governed" it isn't good enough of a system overall, and eventually it devolves into a ochlocracy (can be of the revolutionary communist kind or otherwise), or they u-turn towards a dictatorship as a way of abandoning the democratic system in favor of a non-democratic system that will ensure order. Democracy, like all leftist systems, are not actual functional systems of governance, but instead nothing more than individual planks along an overall backslide away from civilization and towards chaos.

If you put a "price" on voting through either property ownership, military service, etc you avoid the problem of worthless people who contribute nothing to society voting to appropriate the resources from those that do.
