You'd staple down the basics like "what classes are there" in an alpha.
Not that you can really call this an alpha, its an already released and working title, they just added some more assets (and taken out more it seems)

I think the games are more optimized then they appear, in a way. The problem is the creators don't fool the player. If there is a swarm of bugs every bug is rendered with ai and collision computed. In a big explosion physics kick in for every part created by the damage. They could bullshit some optimizations by making faraway horde a single unit or disabling physics for most of objects when fps dip but it would be less impressive game.

And I would love to see their pathfinding algorithm for ants. The fuckers find a way on any angled or curved surface (90 degrees or upside down) and the calculations don't kill the processor when facing several hundreds at the same time.

From what I read the first two missions are set in a prison, it looks to be map related and if I were to guess the first 2 missions here are the tutorial of the game while your character still has a "police uniform" to later having the standard.

Though I actually hope there are alt costumes you can pick.

Sprint seems to have a "start up" animation which is weird. Like roadie running in Gears of War

Well that sprint seems to be useless for anything but getting from A to B the fastest - but it doesn't let you retain awareness of the battle or even see half the map like when diagonal rolling.

Stagger mechanic. The game is not supposed to be piss easy, you know. In 2025/4.1 "flying vehicles" saucers had shitty damage output, but their role was to pin players in place by staggering them.

I'd say they have pretty good damage output considering theres always 800 of them, all of them are scripted to flank and rear you and once one staggers you the rest just gangs up

M8 in Inferno the "flying vehicle" enemy not only will stun lock you but do a fuck ton of damage for something that's "supposed" to be a low class enemy. Even worse in DLC2 where the Red version of those lock on from you across the map.

Strange, but I always found them harder on easier difficulties than Inferno or Hardest. They move slower there that allows them to land more shots on you in one pass. On Inferno they move too fast to keep you pinned.

They both do solid damage, its easily enough to whittle you down even if its not as deadly as getting a facefull of ant-spunk at point blank.

When 2-3 of those shits lock onto you and you have 3 second of reloading you'll lose plenty of HP even on HARD

Come on, now. EDF5 is an obvious reskin of 2025, it's nowhere near to what 2017 was to 2 or 2025 to 2017. 5 feels more like an Assassin's Creed / CoD / FarCry type of sequel.

This IS a reboot, user. It's a completely different timeline than the other games

Also, I'd be completely fine with this type of "sequel" was sold for $20, but you know as well as me that D3 are going to jew out again and ask $50 for the thing.

I also noticed that frogs at least communicate with each other when in group, at least it looked like that. In demo at one point one frop made a gesture with its hand and whole group that was standing in place began to move.
Everything explodes on death now and it's glorious. I thought killing ants already felt great, but they managed to crank it up to 11. Or like flying drones explode with chunks of shattered glass flying everywhere.

Wire guns were much much MUCH better in 2025 like lol, they thought it was a good idea to nerf every single Wire gun's damage by a whopping 2/3s for 4.1.

And limpets by 1/3. They seemingly really didn't like Air Raiders being able to handle themselves competently without a vehicle/air support.

The new drones are just decent looking reskins of the old drones i do kind of like the old spere like shape of the old, hoping these frogs aren't a replacement either.

I wouldn't mind something like the tripods from EDF 2. Exact same function as the hectors, but I always thought looked much more creepy and "alien".

I love fencers using light/dispersal Mortar trash scattering enemies everywhere when myself as Fencer am trying to to funnel and kill all this shit quickly with a spear. Bonus points for friendly fire.

This is one big problem with explosive on later difficulties.
They aren't doing enough damage to kill and just send ant and spiders all over the place to let them flank you from behind.

I mean the 35mm cannon does 10K per shot and 2 NC290 cannons dish out extreme damage as well. Why would you use anything else really.
Also lock on missiles become really useless later on because they don't reload while not equipped so you have to wait 10 seconds for them to reload then another 10 second for full lock on which leaves you extremely vulnerable.

The really need to rethink some of the weapon balance.

The Nereid and Brute helis are fine.

Because of the fascination people have with explosives, you can see in these EDF5 videos too, Rangers using the shit Stingray for everything, not it's intended target of far away enemies.

I see so many Air Raiders overlooking the whole EXCELLENT Whale line cause it doesn't make "big boom."

There's an easy solution for that.
Just buff the big boom.

I haven't figured out how to make this work. I have a feeling when you get into those massive deathswarm moments they would drop like flies and you'd have "REVIVE ME" everywhere. That shit would be annoying.
But I hate how the EDF itself in-game is a fucking joke and you singlehandedly have to win every battle yourself, completely alone.

Motherbase exploration and customization, but don't make it a grindy shitfest like MGSV. It serves as the new menu system. You can access every feature by activating things like lockers, battle plans and comms. Or just use a drop-down menu.
In co-op the lobby lets you explore the host's motherbase.

I like that the levels seem to be breaking away from the traditional EDF layout. Like already, the first level takes place in an underground bunker, the second a military base and the third being a battle in London(?) against giant frogs.

I think this is definitely one if the better things I've seen of the game, because its finally breaking away from the normal formula.

Like literally, every EDF game has the same level structure. The ant levels in cities, then the hectors arriving from sea, the red ants on beach level, the 3 level in a row cave missions, with the second one always being the one where you're surrounded at all angles. It gets repetitive and I'm glad to see they're trying to mix it up

I just hope we get more Mobile Fortress missions.

The problem with EDF soldiers isn't necessarily their strategy or coordination; the problem is that they almost never get upgraded equipment except in the rare few missions where they are meant to win without you. The most that a player needs for effective command is a simple command wheel and for orders (via wheel or ingame chat), to tell them to attack or defend a target or location, follow or wait, keep distance or stay close; very simple toggle options.

It would be nice if the player could control what equipment the NPCs have. Perhaps after unlocking a weapon, the player can assign the preset generic soldier roles within a mission to use a particular weapon. If stricter balancing is desired, this can be locked by level and by a points system so that the soldiers can't all be equipped with the best possible stuff, for example, having to lower the grade of the rifles of all standard rangers to bump up the level of the rocket launchers carried by the rangers that are flagged to carry them.

The first two missions are set in a prison and follow up on each other directly. Considering t hey contain only grey ants I'm assuming this is the "fancy" tutorial, including prison uniform for probably because you haven't joined the EDF yet or some shit.

It's looking nice right now since we haven't seen the same level repeated over and over and the fact that they specially made this demo to show off new stuff, I'm sure we will see the same thing you listed again anyway in addition.

Actually, thinking about EDF if they expanded the scale even more and let you play around with multiple aspects of the military rather than just being grunts on the ground with occasional air raider support really makes me want to play something like that.

The DLC missions didn't have to gradually start off easy and slowly one by one introduce new enemies. I would love it if all the missions in the game were like the DLC ones but that isn't going to happen.

The weapons are a joke and I'm going to guess it's on purpose considering the dev's "joke weapon" humor, it's really impossible to accidentally design weapons so shit that wasn't on purpose.

I know they're for coop and stuff so that people have an incentive to get in vehicles, but it's not as though other players don't have anything better to do unless they're also air raiders who wasted everything else they have.

user, when you're getting overrun, having a proteus with 20k+ health and massive firepower nearby can make all the difference.

The proteus is a bit of an exception since it actually has armour and weapons worth a damn, but the other multiple seat vehicles are really situational at best (aside from joke ones like the bike)

The Brute Helicopter is instant cheese on any map that doesn't have flying enemies, problem is no one wants to use it.

The early helicopters are ass to control, is why, even if some of them like the vulture are quite cost effective if you can aim properly

VGCharts literally makes up numbers, then if there are any retail leaks on real numbers they go back and change them so they're accurate.

In EDF Normal is more like Easy, Hard is Normal, etc.

The jump from Hard to Hardest is huge though. Hardest is actually hardest. There is no proper hard difficulty in EDF.

Equip a Blasthole Spear and a Tower Shield, congrats you are now well equipped to kill 90% of things as long as you keep attacking while being mobile by canceling spear attacks into dashes, the shield will stop anything that does manage to hit you.

2017 removed a lot of features from EDF1 and was actually a simple remake of EDF1. I'll agree that the jump from 2017 to 2025 was huge, which this one might not be, but from the look of it, it seems Sandlot is trying to polish their game and making the existing features better such as adding a sprint for ranger.

Exactly, it's impossible to beat it on hardest on your first go while hard is perfectly viable. I made it till mission 50 on hardest till I gave up and continued on hard as everything was one hit killing me.

This is a five night freddy tier game series and you keep falling far it. Not impressed

Actually, the weapon level limit is what hurts in Hardest the most.
Inferno is easier sometimes because there's no limit.
Enemies kill you so fast on both difficulties you don't want to get hit anyway and limiting your weapons isn't doing much to help.

I like to think no one from here ever plays on normal or below. I personally prefer the spine driver + nc100 cannon combo for my dash cancels, gives decent long range damage whilst moving.

You're an idiot, this actually becomes better the higher difficulty you go because the Blasthole spear gets incredible distances with great damage and piercing.

The Tower Shield is there in the case that you do take a hit and you don't need to play as careful as you would using javelin to dash cancel, otherwise if you are using a shield to reflect you aren't using the spear and this isn't worth while for normal enemies until Gold Ant / Silver Spider Spam.

This is the layout I spend most of my time utilizing Online for clearing Hardest and Inferno, normally on the other hand I have Battle Cannons / Hand Cannon / Hand Cannon + Melee.

Did you know the reason these shits destroy Vehicles so quickly is because they programed their webs to inflict damage on several hitbox passthroughs?

It's not like any of our weapons piercing (except flamethrowers!) that goes through an enemy and only does damage once.

Some of our weapons pierce. Some ranger ones I think, and I know the Railguns go right through groups.

IIRC most class have some form of weapons with piercing properties.

Ranger has Stringer, Flamethrower
Air Raider has Limpet/Claymore ricochet,Web shot, Railgun
Fencer has an arsenal of armor piercing weapon
Wing Diver has ???

The webshots have the saem spider bug where each segment of the web can cause damage. if the weapon had hairworks tessellation on them it's be too OP.
But I don't think the ricochet weapons pierce and the wing diver's lighting bounding all over the place is their equivalent of piercing.

Actually if I were to guess this is probably some unintended side effect of how the spiders web is essentially a ton of shots all linked together as separate parts for the physics, so the game thinks each "pass" is a new "bullet."
