My guess is either (a) the narrative demands 2B be gone and you go get her, putting you in 9S's shoes but not changing anything, or (b) he's part of some non-combat minigame segment, since he's a data-collecting/analyst bot rather than pure soldier.

Yoko Taro is a guy who directs games with fucking insane and crazy plots and characters but are infamous for having mediocre to shit gameplay.

Nier Automata is a Next Gen game, not a game using a PS3 engine being made for PS4 (see: Tales of Berseria). When the game was first shown many thought the game was running on the Unreal 4 engine. It's actually running on an in-house engine made by Platinum Games for Next gen consoles/PC.

With all that said, you can expect the game to at the least require you to be at a PS4's GPU (AMD R7 270) and a decent quad core CPU. Don't forget the game is designed to run at 60FPS and if you can't maintain 60FPS you're doing yourself an injustice. But I guess Nierfags are used to playing Nier/Drakengard at 20 or below FPS
