They are told by a mysterious person that they are stuck inside forever. However, if they kill someone and get away with it, they can leave and everyone else dies. So basically, you figure out mysteries based off clues and debate it in class trials. As the game goes, you learn more and more info on the background of why you are locked inside, who is in charge, etc.
