Honestly, if I had to pick one of the worst PLAYERBASES I've ever had the misfortune of playing with, I'd say Dota might be the shittiest one.

Everyone just hates each other and thinks they are better than everyone else. I mean, MOBAs are fun if played on groups, but playing this game where language is a barrier and with 4 other randoms, where chances are you get a 15 yo Peruvian or a drunk Russian make it so hard to be able to get a good experience. It's literally you fighting against both your team and the enemy.

I know quite a few people that play Dota and they range from high mmr to low mmr and everyone has this love-hate relationship with the game that makes it funny. It's Stockholm syndrome in it's full expression.
I get it we all win and lose, but in other competitive online games you can just shrug it off. In WoT you just play another match for 10 mins and forget about the last one, in Hearthstone it's pretty much the same and you are rewarded if you have a good winstreak, in LoL you play with kids and the game is faster (plus, being on the losing position doesn't feel horrible), in Quake you are 100% reliant on yourself and admit that the other guy is better and the same goes for Starcraft.

Dota is just too weird, it's like the crystal meth or crack of online games. You know it's shit and the people around the game are also the scum of earth, but you keep playing

It's simple, Quake and UT perfected the genre and it required too much skill for average players so they played other games instead. In fact, you can see this trend in gaming in general. In Bioshock you literally couldn't die because you'd just respawn anyway. Same thing happens in Infinite, if you die you just respawn. Every game nowadays require no skill because developers don't want to drive casuals away.

It's not as obvious as Serious Sam, and I'm with you when you say Doom 4 is a good game, but in terms of map design and gameplay pacing, Doom 3 and especially the RoE expansion, aka "the way Doom 3 was meant to be done" were much closer to what made Doom than the new one. The glorykills and the new health system is just nitpicking and minor stuff, but the level design just isn't there and it's painfully obvious they DID TRY to replicate it with some backtracking, but it isn't clever, it's not well done, it's just there for it's own sake.
