What SMT game are you currently playing?

I just beat Strange Journey and am looking for a new one to play. I've already beaten IV and Nocturne. Any recommendations on other ones I should play?

Playing SMT I myself, just made it to Ginza.
Trying to knock it out before Tuesday.

Really digging it so far, so I recommend you play it OP.

Persona 3.

DDS is pretty gud

Apocalypse coming soon too

Are you looking for mainline or just spinoffs? If you want something more similar to Strange Journey, go for SMT 1. If you want something closer to Nocturne, try Digital Devil Saga. Or try one of the Personas if you want something a lot different for a change.

Same here. Playing P3FES and then plan on getting P3P for FeMC.

finishing 4, messing with persona 1, and I need to get back to nocturne eventually

i've been playing SMT IV in chunks for the past year. beat minotaur a few months ago and then dropped the game when i got to medusa like 20 minutes later

i picked it back up today and beat that bitch, now the game is finally in an interesting environment. the whole medieval thing with the naruko dungeon really didn't do it for me, but this tokyo shit/twist is great. how far into the game am i? less than half?

>messing with persona 1
Spoilers, it's shit.
Just go on back to Nocturne, or move on to Innocent Sin.

IV Final comes out Tuesday. Apparently it's pretty good.

More like less than a fourth. You've only beaten the first dungeon.

Minotaur pushed my shit in effortlessly, yet I had no problem with Medusa. Is she normally difficult?

You only got out of the first dungeon. The vast majority of the game is still ahead of you.

Just started Strange Journey but the ROM sometimes freezes on my 3DS so I may have to actually buy it desu

Nah, Minotaur is a fucking beast compared to Medusa.

>move on to Innocent Sin
i'm already like lv 25, might as well power through
and honestly i don't feel like going back to nocturne anytime soon, i'm currenly stuck between choosing to fight the elite oni guys or white ride with his insta kill BS

how far through is the black market in P1?

great, this shit is just now getting good

i only died to minotaur like 3 times, but all of my good demons had whatever he was weak to (fire i think?) so it was easy

i literally didn't have anyone with the wind/force attack for medusa tho so she kicked my shit in, but thankfully i had pic related with nullify gun damage who solo'd her once she was down to like 25% health

but yeah, i think a lot of people do have trouble with her, minotaur and medusa are the ones people always talk about

My buddy loved P3 and finally streamed the entire game for me

It ended up being pretty gay

Rip door-kun

You're about halfway through.

>whatever he was weak to (fire i think?)

WALTER NO

How is Persona 2? Is it too dated? I've played 4 and then 3, and guess while I'm at it, I should probably continue this retarded reverse order I found myself playing this series on.

Trying to finish SJ and going for the neutral route, I just finished jack fight and killed lady ashera.

This game is too good, right level of challenge, and most bosses can be beaten by just changing your demons a little, the grinding is not that hard like in other games.

I think I will try the other routes in new game+, but from what I heard they are unsatisfying.

3 and 4 had a different director to 1 and 2 so they're pretty different from each other

None at the moment. I've been playing a lot lately, before this year I'd never played a single MegaTen game, then I played a bunch of Persona and SMT. In the last few months I've gone through SMT I-IV. Trying to decide if I want to play through Strange Journey and then IV Final, or just IV Final for now and play Strange Journey and If together later on after I've had a good long break from JRPGs.

The combat is pretty slow. That, and lots of random encounters.
The characters are the best in the series, though.

Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei.
After that SMT II. I very much dislike playing them on my PC though.

I'm playing soul hackers and its my first proper SMT. It's frickin awesome. But confusing.

I liked them (though IS I liked a lot more). I think the first Persona is better overall rough though it is, but Persona 2 has good characters and an interesting story.

>I'm playing soul hackers and its my first proper SMT.

No it's not, but you can safely ignore me since I'm just being pedantic.

I guess I'll skip it then. Since some improvements on P4G that aren't on P3FES already annoy me, a worse combat might make me angry. I don't mind how P4G was easy, because I'm mainly playing it for the characters and story, but the combat is still cool to break some of the monotony and add some challenge.

>still no SMT roguelike

literally why

Vs persona it is.

You'll be missing out one a couple of the best games in the series, but if that's okay with you... The combat system is completely different from 3 and 4, so it won't be like going back to 3 after 4. No "Once More" system, you can actually change the Personas of all of your characters, and there's a big emphasis on combining attacks into Fusion Attacks. Really, being able to change everyone's Persona is one of the best parts of the old games I think. Not being able to change them in 3 and 4 kind of annoys me at times.

>You'll be missing out one a couple of the best games in the series

I'm in the last day of DeSu 2 and just finished P1's Sebec route. Is Snow Queen Quest worth or should I jump into P2?

P2:IS is pretty easy, you can get by with just your default Personas. Just put it on fast forward and set your attacks.

The best part of P2 are the character interactions. I think literally every area in the game has new dialogue with your party members when you progress the story; you can also negotiate with demons for tarot cards and for the comedic dialogue. P2 is honestly pretty anime, just 90s anime compared to P3/P4's 00s aesthetic. The characters are a lot more bearable, so you might factor that into your decision to play or not.

Persona 2 is one of my favorite games of all time and I hope you enjoy it too.

from what I hear the snow queen quest is 90% dungeons

it's worth it if you like P1's dungeons and combat, and trash if you don't

>Spoilers, it's shit.

You damn kids and your shit taste.

Okay, it is pretty rough and I can understand why people don't like it, since I myself like it more for the atmosphere and the music, and even the story, though I think the gameplay is fine. I honestly wonder if opinions would be a bit different if the PSP version didn't have such a shitty OST. I played the Japanese PSX version and later watched some videos of the PSP version, and aside from the fact that they removed most of the good songs, they fucked up scenes too. I saw some scenes that had a serious "Shit's going down!" theme in the original that was replace by a silly, happy theme in the PSP version. The fact that it also lacks the original Karma Palace and Snow Queen themes is horrible beyond measure; I hope they re-release the PSP version someday on Vita or something with an option for which soundtrack you'd like to listen to.

It is. Pretty fucking annoying dungeons at all. The only things I like about the snow Queen quest is the Snow Queen's theme and being able to get really powerful abilities right at the start.

>music
>atmosphere
>psp version was bad
gee, I guess that means I'm ~15 hours into the wrong version of the game

I do have to warn you Naraku is the hardest part of the game everything after that is smoothsailing.

>I myself like it more for the atmosphere and the music
That's about all it's good for.

The grid based combat, and overly complicated demon negotiations, and the fusions kill it for me.

youtube.com/watch?v=exGduIbhwUs

If you can't into Nip, it's the best version. The changes and additions aside the music actually sound nice and I'd like to play it, but I really like the original music, so I haven't been able to bring myself to.

playing IV A and Persona 5. enjoying both.
but i gotta say P5 dungeon is a lot more complex and fun.

>first floor
>Mudo

Actually, SMT Mystery Dungeon could possibly work.
Fuck now I want it

Oh fuck, guess I'll start P2 once I finish Survivor then.
Thanks anons

>king kenji
>baalzebub

You do know there is a patch to restore the music right?

>instadeath means it can't work as a rougelike

confirmed for never having played Wizardry 1

I wasn't really fond of Persona 3 and 4 for a lot of reasons, but I'm wondering if I should give Persona 5 a shot. Sounds there are some nice changes/additions to the series and the dungeons not being randomly generated might make it more interesting. But I should play Final first just to get the main games in the SMT series out of the way.

SMT 1. I'm liking the game more than nocturne

That is optional though I beat all routes without ever beating Beelzebub in smt IV including neutral.

Apocalypse.

This shit is great

king kenji is not optional

Yeah, though I've heard it kinda sucks. I think the music is supposed to be quieter, I think I heard it has looping issues, but I'm not sure about that, and only a third of the music was restored. If I'm wrong and the patch is actually great and restores all the music, I'll happily give it a go.

Then how did I beat neutral if I didn't beat beelzebub.

All the fucking time, Anthony. Why is there such a huge lack of SMT porn? The demons are perfect for it.

>TFW you'll never read a doujin about a shy girl fusing with a demon and turning into a literal semen demon to get the guy she likes to notice her.

I've only beaten Strange Journey, but I have Persona 3, Persona Q, Nocturne, Devil Survivor, and SMTIV all at various points in the game. I just can't bring myself to just stick to one and finish it.

SMT IV and I have no idea how much longer until I finish. Belzebub is such a asshole

Yeah, I just played the game a few weeks ago and never even saw Beelzebub.

main dungeons are like Zelda dungeon now. there's still random dungeon for side quests.

combat is very snappy fast and they add some new(actually bring back) elements like Nuclear,Psi,Dark,Light,Gun damage.

Demon negotiation also back but different from mainline SMT. you dont give Demon your item, you knock them down put gun on their head and convince them to join you. a lot less random than SMT

I'm playing Nocturne but I just don't get it

I don't understand all the magatama shit, I don't know when I should be leveling/combining demons. this shit is barely explained at all

I don't know what the fuck im doing but I seem to be moving along regardless, don't know if I really like this game so far. Was hoping for something with better story since the gameplay hasn't been too compelling, maybe I just don't get this series.

Playing DeSu Overclocked.
Currently on the 8th day of Naoya's route, and after getting almost stomped twice by Babel on Day 7, it was refreshing to have some less intense fights, as well as discovering how to exploit the Macabre spawner in one of the free battles to get lalrge amounts of Macca.

The Magatama system is pretty garbage and probably one of the worst skill gaining mechanics for the main character in the series. The best way to get around how garbage it is is to just look up a guide as to what Magatama gives you what skills at what levels.

where in
did i mention beelzebub?

>a lot less random than SMT

I'm actually okay with this. I liked the way the conversations with demons were in Persona 1 and 2. While I quite enjoy SMT, the randomness of the conversations can be annoying sometimes.

You switch Magatama when you need certain resistances or strengths. Did you just get wailed on by a boss that loves using physical attacks? Try using a Magatama that resists or voids them next time. As for Magatama skills, just look up a list of skills the Magatamas give you and see which one has the skills you want (you want Fog breath and Focus).

Just fuse demons whenever you can. Go through a dungeon, get some demons, go see what new ones you can fuse. It can be a bit overwhelming, I felt that way for awhile when I got into MegaTen.

Nocturne does not have the strongest story in the SMT series. It's mostly about gameplay. Most SMTs are, really. Try Persona if you're more concerned with story. I've heard that DDS has a good story too, but I haven't played that one yet.

It's nice to see someone talk about P5 gameplay instead of waifus for a change.

It seems like they made the combat everything I've wanted it to be for years. 3/4 battle system but bringing back elements and mechanics from 1/2. Seems almost perfect. I can't wait to play it in February.

Yeah, it seems interesting.

>TFW when I've been trying to give JRPGs a break for months, but I keep finding "one more" I want to play right away.

Well, I guess I'll give P5 a shot after I finish SMT IV Final. Though I should go through Tatsuya's scenario in the PSP version of Eternal Punishment first, I completely forgot about it when I played it months ago and only just remembered it. Anyone know about how long it is? I don't expect it'll take too long, though I know there's a lot of reading.

I'm playing Strange Journey myself.
Currently stuck on Asherah cause my party is getting enraged, just like the Asura fight.

I love this game so much.
My favorite SMT so far.

When the magatama is glowing on your menu that means if you level up with it equipped it will give you a new skill
Each gives their skills at certain levels and you can't miss the skills by being too high a level
Equipping a magatama will obviously also give you the bonus stats and resistances that it shows

thank you for the replies, I'm grinding out a bit before this matador boss cause hes kicking my ass

In the Mannequin village you can buy a magatama that gives wind resistance, be sure to get demons with hit rate buffs/debuffs

He's the boss that teaches you to use buffs.

Evolve an Inugami (It evolves at level 17 into a Lv. 22 Makami as long as you're level 18) with Fog Breath to counter act his Red Capote. It loses its weakness to force upon evolution.

Fuse Uzumi so you can have Media. Uzumi will also waste Matador's Press Turns because she Nulls Force, and he only knows Mazan, not Zan.

Use whatever 3rd Demon you want, as long as it's not weak to Force.

If you're using a Physical MC, I'd recommend using Kamudo for its +5 Str. Remember that Heat Wave (along with all other Weapon Skills) Is based of your Vit stat though, so if you want to use Heat Wave, Equip Ankh or Iyomante.

If (for some reason) you have a Magic MC, equip Hifumi for its +5 Mag (and Void Force, but it's kind of redundant because Uzumi already Wastes Matador's Press turns.)

Literally all you need to beat Matador is a Nozuchi that knows Sukukuja and the null force magatama

SMT 4 and then the sequel immediately following

Fog Breath is much better than Sukukaja and this set up sets him up for awhile.

Playing 4 as my first SMT.

It's kind of annoying that you pretty much have to fusion after a certain point instead of just levelling them up indefinitely and keeping your favorites.

Also, Tokyo city feels like a step down from the tower or whatever you call that dungeon.

It's been easier to shitpost about waifus or the story, but the game really is a huge step above 3 and 4. The one thing I'm most pleased with is Hard mode has actually been tuned really well so far (I'm about halfway through the game), and there's no dumb shit like reducing the amount of money or experience you get. The difficulty curve's been pretty smooth and it's really encouraged me to take advantage of the tons of utility you get from co-ops.

Lots of really nice quality of life changes too that just make it really smooth to play. Also have to second that other user praising the dungeons, they're outright some of the best a 3D Megaten game has had. Every one has a couple new gimmicks and puzzles to it, and they're pretty lengthy and sprawling too.

Yeah but it also requires him to grind to level 18 when you can easily beat it 5 levels earlier
hell at that point you might as well just tell him to grind to 22 to get Fog Breath on Demifiend with the ice magatama

18 is not an unreasonable level to be at at that point in the game.
