I'd play it instead of Overwatch just because it's a better FPS. That isn't saying much though since you can't really set the bar much lower than Overwatch did. I still don't like either one of them.

It comes down to money, if you have the cash for overwatch def do it. any new content they add to the game is free. so no micro-transaction outside of loot boxes which you get at every level free anyway.
If you don't have money then paladins. But it does have micro-transaction, to get new characters and cards. cards are passive abilities for your character. so depending on your mind set you can think of it as pay for an advantage. but you do still get loot boxes for free every level up which sometimes has cards.

And this is just me but the "feel" of paladins is over all worse. the game feels cheaper, kills don't feel as meaty, some char's abilities are kinda janky (like the chain turtles draw in seemed to just glitch my character when caught in it.) the levels feel life less the character personalities are all seem to have been shat out by a few CEO's. but the game is solid enough.

Paladins characters have more expansive kits, larger maps, a more balanced gamemode, and less compelling ultis but more focus on shooting. It has less character though.
Overwatch has references, lore and is focused on swapping heroes to counter things and team comp.

Besides the obvious fact it rips off of Overwatch (so much so that even the options menu UI is the same), fighting doesn't feel fluid, abilities don't seem to have weight to them and many champions are just awkward to play.

Yes, but Overwatch still requires SOME kind of skill on their aiming characters. Paladins requires almost zero aiming skill in comparison. Paladins also puts a gigantic emphasis on abilities to the point where it's a MOBA in an FPS skin, where Overwatch is an FPS with MOBA elements.

Then overwatch? Easy, characters are capable of more with more expansive kits, maps are larger, balance is needed because they don't use the excuse "its supposed to counter this"
The gamemode is more balanced due to symmetry, maps allow flanking from more angles and take longer to learn, cards allow specialized playstyles to flourish, sniper can't 1 hit kill without ulti up, but is still useful and can dominate a match if you are skilled, characters take longer to learn and master due to card system and expansive kits.

Overwatch mechanics are way better in my opinion and lends itself better to balance. But there is no reason you cant play both. I'm playing Paladins right now because it's new and free, and when Overawatch gets a content update I will set it aside to go back. No point in picking sides, just play what you feel like at the time or has new content.

I played paladins competitively for a stint before overwatch launched and desu paladins has a faster pace than OW does, the card system was redone 2-3 times when I played and the new UI is clunkier than the first one. Other than that it's not bad at all, the supposed grind for characters is non-existant, you get enough for a character every third win or so. I bought the founders pack for 20 yuros back then to get cards because I wanted to shit on people with my main man Pip.

With some 200h in OW and only starting this (maybe 2h in), I will stick to overwatch. Paladins isn't pure garbage by any means, but I find the map design way too claustrophobic, and the gunplay weightless and lacking in feedback. Overall, my initial impression is that Paladins is to Overwatch what a Yugo is to Volkswagen- both will get you to place, but if you can afford the VW, why not get the extra comfort? OW is just more polished and smoother to play in the long run.

Just downloaded it because why not and I hadn't seen any gameplay before I played. It really does feel like a ripoff of Overwatch. They're so similar.

I had fun though. I liked that Victor guy the most. Always fun to pick the grunt class and just gun people down. I'll probably play more, honestly. It feels pretty average, but it's also F2P, and it's better than a lot of F2P games I've played.

I miss the Alpha days. The seige engine was an actual cannon, and the defending team needed to smash it. The Teleporter being there, then removed, then back as a Burn card when they patched those in, then gone again. Horses used to be a thing everyone could just do whenever you wanted, and taking damage unmounted you. Buck and Fernando has specific 'Horse' cards, like being unmountable or doing it in the air and sonic'ing away.

Some excerpts from my Alpha memories.

If you check a video, or the game itself, plenty of characters look the same, have the same type of weapons (they even look/shoot the same).

Ability wise too.
It's like a 1:1 copy with some minor changes.

Now I am not a fanboy, I could definitely play any other class based shooter, but:
- I doubt Hi-Rez will consider adding proper anti cheat.
- I don't think high tickrate will be implemented.
- Projectile weapons already have a huge lag, they all feel weird.

Well if you develop characters from 0, yes it takes a very long time. But if you can just copy ideas, or even the whole character from other games, it makes things much faster.

Agreed. SMITE is still original, looks good, feels good. They could have upped graphics quite a bit to make it more appealing, but that's it.

I can't play more than a match of Overwatch without playing, and my friend keeps PMing me about how he hates playing Overwatch yet plays it still for some reason.

I picked this game up and can play it for hours without getting bored. It's got charm and isn't a fuckin slog at any point of the match that makes you want to kill yourself.

I'd say Paladins just because that. Also it's on Steam, so easier access.

I think it does, just a little bit. The card system alone gives you the ability to try different playstyles for each character, where there is none in OW.

OW is certainly more refined in gameplay, but not necessarily depth.

As someone who's got 4,000 hours in TF2 (maybe half from idling), I can tell you that while TF2 is a mess compared to the original, it i still just as fun to play. Only problem is you have to understand the weapons and also hope you don't get matched with gibus shitters and AFKs.

Luckily, the matchmaking has made people more weary of AFKs somehow, so they get kicked pretty quickly. Sometimes players who are absolutely useless get kicked too.

Paladins didn't rip off OW, they both ripped off TF2.
Barik plays more similar to a gunslinger engie, and it actually makes sense for a dwarf to be in a fantasy setting like paladins rather than a sci-fi utopia thing.
Literally the just bothg have bombs. that's the only similarity. Bomb King doesn't even have a gun, he throws them. If you're talking about the ult, that throws him right into the battle rather than from where he activated it, complete balance difference.
