Will we ever get such douchy outright "evil" but still simple and belieavable rivals villains in pokemon again? In Gen 1 Gary/Blue was always one step ahead of the player, even if he lost every fight he still became the champion before the player. Player was literally badmouthed every encounter with Blue and was basically in his shadow through whole his journey. And only after championship battle did the player finally overcome Blue which made all so much more climatic.
Giovanni himself was a simple poachers mafia leader who had several agendas and secretly funded researches. All are pretty relateable and completely logical things outside of magical pets premise.

Then in Gen 2 we had a cruel pokemon thief rival as well as remnants of Team Rocket who went out in different ways such as poaching again, science and terroristic act with hostages.

And after Gen 3 it all went to shit with friendly rivals and various teams' leaders whose logic is so fucking ridden with fallacies that even a kindergarten kid could point out how broken it is.

In Gen 5 the series took a different turn with narrative going for more emphasized plot and opponents' characters which was quite cliched in retrospective but still better than what we had in Gen 3-4 and now it all took another step backwards.

I kinda hoped the franchise would get more mature or at least more believable but on the contrary best gens in that regard are still 1-2 and to some extent 5.
