I find it largely generic and uninteresting. A lot of it is very samey and none of it really challenges me as a listener

I think most people like them for the wrong reasons. Like, ever since Cobain died, he's been painted as this tortured poet sort of guy who spoke for a generation and all that crap, but that wasn't him at all. Nirvana were more like a culmination of all these developments in the American college rock circuit and they represented the point where they were finally dug up by the masses. And they knew it themselves and when they were still around they would plug a lot of these 80s bands like the Meat Puppets and the Melvins, which lead those older bands to get more exposure directly from one the bigger bands of the moment.
