Anyone slowly getting more casual as you get older?

Anyone slowly getting more casual as you get older?

>mfw I don't have the attention span that I used to
>mfw games are too goddamned big and overwhelming anymore(skyrim, mgs5, witcher 3 etc.)
>mfw the open world meme has gone too fucking far

I get like 25% through a game and its too overwhelming, or I make the wrong build, or I missed something early on, so I restart and keep restarting over and over. It's gotten to the point where my severe autism can't handle it anymore, and I'm tired. I'm genuinely discouraged from ever playing any new games. I want something casual, cozy and fun. Devil may cry games, dark souls usually do it for me because its a more confined soace with less to worry about and you can focus on having fun.

Games have got vastly more complicated since I was a kid and it's kind of alienating.

complicated? are you sure you just didn't get dumber?

are you fucking joking?

Not even Paradox Grand Strategy games have gotten more complicated.

I get through about 75% of a game then watch a playthrough just to see it end but I skim through it in like 15 minutes

nope

nope

That's because RPG's suck. I seriously don't see the appeal to any of them. I'm sick of games that make you start off by forcing you to watch a shitload of cutscenes before you get to play the game, just to be thrown into another hour of walking segments. Go S rank MGR or something op, it will make you feel better.

nice blogpost frogfucker
kill yourself

>frogposters in charge of not being retarded, autistic, or some combination of the two

I agree completely. Fuck games longer than about 30 hours to play. I've got hundreds of other games to play and I don't need to waste 150 hours in some bland, unfocused game just so I can spend 75 of them running across some ridiculously huge map.

...

nowadays i can play a game for a few minutes and decide if i want to finish a game to completion. or i look at videos of the endgameplay and if it's confusing af i know i'll have a good time learning the mechanics

I just don't have the time that I used to and can't sit through a 70+ hour game. Life gets in the way and it ends up collecting dust.

Gaming for me these days has been reduced to the occasional Mario Kart 8 round and half a round of Mario Maker 100 Mario Challenge on medium.

Its getting to this point with me aswell 33 here

I started gaming in late 90's, that's the level of technology my brain grew up with. I've noticed more and more that the modern technological marvels that games nowdays are are graphically so intense my brain is working overtime trying to keep up with everything going on on the display. Deus Ex MD is fucking pain with all that detail. I shouldn't complain but fuck.

Pretty sad that this is adulthood. I still desperately attempt to start games with the belief I will totally finish this, I'm totally going to get into it.

A big part of it is that there is so much released. I start playing fucking Tokyo Mirage Sessions that I got months ago, and then DQ7 comes out or something. Maybe I'm just susceptible to hype and marketing, but there is almost always at least 2 or 3 games a month that catch my eye that I want to play, but I don't finish games that fast so I'm just on a treadmill of a couple of hours per game.

I stopped buying shit last month though. I've got enough games I haven't even touched.

I only play games with "infinite" or direct gameplay these days.

MH,Rhythm games, puzzles and shit on that level.

play some brain training games?

enough of these stupid depression threads. you all need to go see a doctor. because i'm a few months away from 30 and i enjoy games even more now than i used to as a child. there is something seriously wrong with your brains, and it has nothing to do with video games.

It's actually the opposite.
Games I found hard as a child (I never beat Banjo Kazooie) are now easy af.

I'll agree that many open world games are unecessarily overwhelming. Bethesda games are the worst, id rather play a game with less content if that content was much better than a bunch of repetitive fetch quests and similar dungeons.

>direct gameplay
Explain?

What is a good mobile game?

I'm doing this, but you can stick to things with a high skill ceiling that don't require as much time to sate your autism.

Go for things like Quake, UT, CS, and other multiplayer titles.

Games are easier than they were as a kid but I lose focus more quickly. Though I think that's more because I can afford to buy whatever games I want now, I don't have to make one game last months.

Wouldn't say that, its just current gen games are divided between being multiplayer slugfests, indie mix bags, and huge solos, with little inbetween

Looking at the past, aside from PS1 era/late 90s crpgs, everything else is literally a 10 hr romp at best. Original Final Fantasy? Dragon Quest 1? As a kid they were epics, play it now and they're 4 days long at best. SNES rpgs are like a week or 2 of casual playing, especially with speeding them up. Those eras were populated by platformers, beatemups, and arcade ports that were designed to be 8 stages long, there's no fucking up on builds there, and beating them never took an epic long story strewn between 3 games - you'll get an expansion pack at best and a sequel if its really good.

Late 90s fucked up the timing expectation with everything being 60 hrs or bust, and now its marketing knowing only 25% of the consumers who buy will actually get to the end of the game, so why even bother putting money there

Its not a change of becoming casual, its just that generations have their trends

Gameplay starts the instant you start, and remains mostly uninterrupted for the majority of the game.

I think he means games that revolve solely around gameplay, instead of being crammed full of metagame shit like EXP, leveling, crafting systems, open-world collectibles, etc.

Yes it's happening to me too but I don't understand how you're too casual for Skyrim but DmC and Dark Souls are ok for you. Skyrim is one of my 'go to' casual games because I just pick a random place and make a campsite with my follower.

Anyway, my attitude is due to a lot of things: attention span getting shorter, real life getting busier and the types of games being made today not appealing to me and being tired of games in general.

I replayed GTA3 the other day but some of the missions just made me frustrated. In the end I had more fun watching a no commentary walkthrough where the player knew optimal strategies.

Nowdays I like to chill with a city builder game, puzzler, rpgs, Outrun2006 and L4D2.

>tfw getting dumber every year

Shit like Skyrim or DA:I or MMORPGs are overwhelming mechanically.

They are "not-casual" in the sense that they are incredibly time-consuming.

I got this with xenoblade x

>playan like 20-30 hours, game is pretty great, level up as samurai gunner--->duelist

>quickly realize duelist is probably the least interesting class I could have chosen

>starting a new class will severely gimp me until I'm maxed out on duelist, and then I get to use shitty duelist weapons and skills while I level up the other class

>realize I've only mapped like 20% of the game, never mind actually completing the content there. don't even have my skell yet, literally the centerpiece of the case artwork and one of the main features of the game

>never play again

Overwhelming? The only overwhelming games to me are the old shit like World of Warcraft or Starcraft, or LoL

When they start introducing 10+ classes, each with 50 different mastery configurations and item trees, it gets too complicated for me if I'm just starting out the game.

Skyrim was hard I'll admit, still beat it, but barely. The character building made no sense to me and at many points were not fun to learn or deploy. Sorry, not all of us played Oblivion or the other Bethusda games. I'm glad many games casualized its single player for newcomers. What I don't like is Nintendo making their games for basically retards and hand holding the entire time, even a built in magic auto runner. Don't want my kids going through that easy shit.

>mfw I don't have the attention span that I used to

Pretty much this. As a child I had a LOT bigger tolerance for mediocrity and honestly I think it was for the better. Now if a game doesn't grip me in the first hour or two I'm just gonna drop it and move on.

joe go finish xenoblade

I don't like modern sandbox RPGs.
"Kill X amount of Y" is not a quest. It's a fucking chore.
Unlimited """""quests""""" is not something you should be proud of.

DOTA/LoL/Minecraft/gimmicky-survival-game-of-the-month are supposed to be over-complicated breadth-oriented opaque timesucks for the underaged.

The problem is not open world games. The problem is that games that get nothing from being open world are forced to be open world.

What the fuck does Far Cry get from being open world? Fucking nothing. The open world is basically just a big level-select screen. Why the fuck is Mirror's Edge 2 open world?

...

>this guy has no job and all the time in the world to play games, which are financed by his aging parents

I just don't like grindy shit anymore. Anything where 99% of the game is doing repetitive actions in the same area, RPGs being the primary culprit

Watching numbers get bigger after wasting a lot of time was entertaining as a kid but it has definitely lost its luster

>putting dota in the same category as minecraft

u wot m8

I can understand lumping LoL in there because you have to grind for rune pages and all that, but Dota is literally pure 100% gameplay. No grinding, no unlocks, you enter a match and you're playing until it's over.

Thats what happens when you get older OP. It is normal.

Sort of like the arcade mindset of putting the player in control of the game ASAP and then never taking it away.

>that picture

It is too accurate.

>mfw the open world meme has gone too fucking far

I feel you OP. I want this shit to end too.

Because videogames, despite being the common interactive media, become boring as fuck after like 10k hours.

It's nothing to do with grinding, it's breadth-based game mechanics - needless complexity, which ends up as a meaningless time suck

I don't play games that advertise themselves as taking '200 hours to complete', or as 'incredibly addictive!' or similar any more. I just don't have the time. I can't give myself to a game for 2 weeks straight in the same way - even if I take holiday from work to play games I can't just give in and think only of the moment anymore. It just feels like I'm wasting my limited paid vacation days.

There were no pretty lies on the door when you entered. Live it down. I will.

That's why I stopped playing themepark MMOs. I got sick of replacing my gear just to see my damage numbers get bigger every patch. It just doesn't excite me anymore and the grind felt pointless.

>started drawing and writing
>got part time job instead of a full-time one so i can have more free time
>didn't fall for the family and kids meme

and my video game enjoyment never stagnated

My exact complain about Mad Max.

Join the army, bro. It's a good way to restart your failed life, and you'll find a lot of people there in similar circumstances.

I dunno. I play a lot more turn-based strategy now. I like relatively challenging games, but I also like being able to play for five or ten minutes at a time and being able to continue right where I left off. I take a lot of breaks, guess I have no stamina or no ability to focus for great lengths of time, and sometimes those breaks turn into closing the game and going off to do something else.

>tfw i want games to have tons of replayability and multiple endings yet i only ever have the time to play the game through once

I did see a doctor. Well, several doctors actually. In the end, turns out I have depression and mild autism. I was your age when I finally got diagnosed. At least now the first three decades of misery make a bit of sense.

I still love vidya, they're my only real friends.

I am going to get banned for saying this but these days I find more enjoyment from simple casual phone games than big ''real'' games.

Nah I was always after the adventure aspect of it all so I play games pretty much as I used to.

My life is more shit than ever but I also enjoy the games more than ever (not like there are many new enjoyable games around but I appreciate rare good games that there are plus I'm getting into emulation so there is an endless amount of games to be enjoyed).

I recommend getting into self-help and religious stuff. It probably won't make you a millionaire but you will learn to appreciate what you have as well as looking at things from a different perspective.

Cooking Mama, Geometry Dash, Gordon Ramsay Dash, Ridiculous Fishing, Super Hexagon.

>Gordon Ramsay Dash

Is there cursing?

Then don't play long games, you fucking retard.

I don't think this is an issue about difficulty even though he used the word casual. Recently I played some of the nemeses from my childhood and beat them easily. However, I don't have as much time to spend on games working, working out, going out drinking, hanging out with friends and so on. Life was easier for the video games when I studied for 4-5 hours and they played vidya.

They discovered our lair.

Woah rude. You made me more depressed now.

Arcade-style games have been dying for years, replaced by ever more complex titles

Why is that chicken so rude? Those foxes just want to eat.

Bunnies are so cool.

Please don't pander to the dark side, there's still hope, just enjoy your old games but don't go full mobile, they're one of the causes modern gaming is going to shit.

Emulation. And shorter games haven't died. This thread is pointless. All OP has to do is search "x game length"

>started playing most games on easy because it gives a smooth, seamless experience instead of having to restart from a checkpoint twenty times
>can't use a mouse and keyboard anymore, have to map everything to a gamepad
>legitimately enjoy David Cage games

The world needs more cuhrazy and souls games, and less open world monotony and collectkillfetchescort games.

Short games aren't the same as arcade games. A game like Crazy Taxi just would not be made today.

I'm in a similar boat. Only for me I try to do side quests for a bit because if I really like a game I don't want it to end. Once I beat a game I usually never do the side content, so I figure I might as well prolong the game by doing it beforehand. Only I end up getting burnt out so I either have to rush to the end, or drop the game.

I used to hate when games were short, but I sorta understand why so many people, namely journalists like shorter games now. I can't blame them. I should really start buying less games.

I blame open world games.

This HAS to be bait. Games these days spoon feed you everything. There's no depth.

Fuck you, I got my first smartphone for free last month and I've been pirating the shit out of vidya to make my tube journeys more entertaining.

>just hit 26
>feel like I am in my prime
>top 1% in BF3 BF4 CoD WaW, CoD 4, CoD AW, Black Ops 3

>MFW no esports on PC for any of these games

Oh how I wish I could stop doing th 9-5 and become a professional gamer, but for some reason only CSGO is a PC esport, and I fucking hate that game.

ALRIGHT LET'S GO MAKE SOME CUHRAZY MONEY!

Thank you for reminding me that game exists.

I've bought so many games over the past 2ish years that I have hardly touched if at all. I'm not even counting steam games here, I have games still in the plastic for fucks sake. I get all the hype for the game but when its finally here It derails faster that the train it rode in on. .

it's not CSGO's fault your taste in vidya is shit

Hoky fuck ima go emulate crazy taxi now, thanks user

>had one hell of a time finding out where to go in SMTIV when it released
>decide to replay it because i'm quick to forget most things but i remember liking that game
>only get stuck ONCE for about 2 minutes because i misread shinjuku as shibuya
>also find i have way more patience to do all the challenge quests this time

idkwtf happened but i feel way more dedicated and less adhd about most video games.

>Too complicated
>skyrim
>witcher 3

I guess bait just does not interest me.

I never complete games anymore.

Why the hate for Open World games?

this should wake you up buddy, pic is sooooo related.

SO MUCH TO DO TOO MUCH TO SEE

Spray patterns and no aiming down sights sure is fun too.

CSGo is a fucking old ass game which has inflated numbers because of the stupid skin lottery bullshit.

COD is rather shit now as well, but at least there is some challenge up in the top 1,000 leaderboards.

BF is pretty fun, a nice meld between realism and arcade style shooting.

CSGO is like the autistic kid who couldn't figure out that guns don't have spray patterns, slowly walking doesn't make your aim go to shit IRL, and aiming at the gut doesn't get you a headshot IRL.

>its too overwhelming

What the fuck does this even mean? Do you just go "Oh shit, there's more than 4 quests. I can't handle this anymore."?

I feel it. Sometimes I'll convince myself "ok, tonight I'm just gonna immerse myself in this game" but I just can't do it. I can't sit there and put myself in a game world like I used to when I was younger. I have no doubt it's the adult shit in my life and lack of tons of free time that just eats away at me any time I play vidya now. And on the rare occasion I stay up late enough to where my adult guilt isn't really a factor, I'm too tired to devote much of my attention to anything.

In theory there's nothing wrong with open world games.

In practice they're all tedious grinds full of bullshit.

>CSGo is a fucking old ass game which has inflated numbers because of the stupid skin lottery bullshit
counter strike has always been one of the highest played games on the pc, even before the skin lottery bullshit.
>no aiming down sights sure is fun
literally every serious multiplayer fps pre-cod had no ironsights. so yes, no aiming down sights sure is fun.

Your problem is you're stupid.

CSGO is boring IMHO.

Everyone just tries to camp with AWP and votes Dust II.

Nostalgia glasses for sure, csgo has some really outdated ideas, but its still fun to mess around with.

I feel like I have too much to play/watch nowadays. Like, why spend all this time on one game when I can just move on to something else?

Yeah, except those games weren't boring campfests.

Quake and UT were extremely fast paced arcade style shooters.

CS:S and CS:GO aren't arcade style shooters, if anything a tactical shooter SHOULD have ironsights.

ARMA and Rainbow Six for example.

>CS:S and CS:GO aren't arcade style shooters, if anything a tactical shooter SHOULD have ironsights.
except counter strike is the prototypical tactical shooter and it doesn't have ironsights.

the only fun i'm having with video games recently are just cheats and exploits , ruining people fun is my fun

Many open world games have basically no redeeming qualities to the open world. It ends up being nothing more than a vastly overcomplicated level-select screen. The ones with a shitload of procedurally generated "quests" are the worst offenders. Skyrim's "infinite" quests are the best example. "Go to X, kill Y" is not a quest, it's a chore.

You do realise that ironsights slow down the gameplay even more right?

t. played deathmatch and thinks that's the whole game

> highest numbers
> cheapest FPS on steam that isn't dead

Huh thats why all the hackers just rebuy the game on new accounts?
Or the extremely high number of botting accounts, AFK crate accounts, skin lotto bots, etc etc

CS:GO is a shithole

kek'd

That's neuroplasticity for ya, your brain starts to degrade after you hit 25. Sorry user.

You realize you are wrong, right?

Hurr durr, rush b cyka blin cyka cyka cheeki breeki brbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbr jajajajajajajajaj

Oh man cs:go is fun. Looks like a game that threw up on the screen, look at those crisp graphics and smooth gameplay. Look at that guy hacking and going 30-1

Look my whole team sucks and half of them left the match in ranked and I have to sit through 15 more rounds with half a team.

Look, moving an inch to the left or right means you can't hit the side of a barn. That sure is realistic. Sure is a "proto"tactical shooter, where the soliders guns have the accuracy of a star wars blaster and good people just memorizes how shit the guns accuracy is.

No bullet drop, no sights, no bullet travel time. Hitscan spray patterns. Sure takes skill

>You realize you are wrong, right?
ironsights do slow down gameplay. it is a commonly accepted fact. it is one of the reasons why for many the fps genre has been dead for a long time because games insist on shoving ironsights where they don't belong. there is no version of reality where ironsights make games faster paced. do you think quake with ironsights would be faster or slower than normal quake? use some commong sense.

yes. being an oldfag sucks

i don't have time for gaming and now even 13 year olds play FPS better than me.

truly disgusting. good thing i only play singleplayer now

there are a shitload of games coming out. try them all breh. games are games

>Looks like a game that threw up on the screen
Meanwhile you idolise games like CoD (jam on the screen) and Battlefield (so-real filters and dirt on the camera lens)
>look at those crisp graphics
They are pretty crisp and scale well to a variety of machines
>Look my whole team sucks and half of them left the match in ranked
play with friends or don't play ranked? i don't see how CoD is any different
>No bullet drop, no fights, no bullet travel time. Hitscan spray patterns. Sure takes skill
Takes more skill than BF and CoD, i.e. the games you play

CSGO is slower paced than Battlefield and CoD and both of them have ads.

CSGO...

Where to be good you literally have to exploit the game.

You think bunny hopping is realistic?

You think rapid strafing would really make your accuracy better IRL? That bullets would just miss you outright because your spamming A and D?

You know those old people who pick a controller and they say ''which one is the jump button?''. I had to ask that to my little sister few weeks ago and it hit me so hard.

>You think bunny hopping is realistic?
So we're talking about realism now? Where do you think CoD and BF fit on the 'realism' scale you fucking moron? And what does realism have to do with them being good games?

And exploiting the game to be pro is sure realistic too.

Bunny hopping would totally work IRL, just imagine SWAT breaching a house and bunny hopping to the hostage.

Also rapid strafing, sure would be able to shoot straight why stuttering back and forth like an old man with Parkinsons. Love how bullets just go through people when they do that shit.

And its funny that you say that ADS is shit when one of the best guns is scoped (AWP)

Huh... strange that so many people love a gun that has ADS in a game with no ADS. What a puzzler.

I love when shitters like you join my game, with 3-4k hours in CSGO and get absolutely shit on and cry hacks.

More realistic than being able to reload your gun by swapping to a knife.

More realistic that being able to ADS with an AWP while jumping from a ledge and shooting midair.
More realistic than fucking SPRAY patterns and HITSCAN guns.

>implying i have the time or the interest to play shitty console shovelware like CoD or modern Battlefield

>mfw the open world meme has gone too fucking far
This is the actual problem, my man. It has nothing to do with your age. The open world meme has spread like cancer and it's disgusting.

Not him, but I'd rather have a 10 hour game with good pacing and replay value than a 100 hour grindfest.

Have fun with your russian infested game with inflated numbers.

Funny how the player count dropped after Valve started cracking down on lotto.

Funny how so many people get banned yet can just buy the game for $5 and start playing again.

Funny how asshurt people get when you say you don't like csgo.

Harder != convoluted

Modern games have too much filler shit and people grown up in the age of arcade gaming don't want to put up with it.

This is roughly how I feel.

When a game drip-feeds me mechanics over the course of hours and hours rather than just dumping me in the deep end with all the tools the game has to offer, I feel bored and insulted and more inclined to try a different game rather than suffer through an extended tutorial.

That's your fault for being a dumbo not old

capybaras don't deserve this kind of treatment, they're nature's zen monks.

It sounds more like you're just getting bored with bland, easy games. Just start playing better games and you'll probably regain your attention span.

More or less how i feel about persona 3.

I mean no other form of media do people demand longevity just cause.
Like i watched the revenant yesterday shit should of been an hour shorter. Just cut am hour of leo breathing heavy. It's not like i would of said it's worth less money as a 90 minute movie, or 2.5 hours meant i got my monies worth. But in vidya that would be horrible! Curse cut content and short games. Likewise with shows like the mentalist that just milk everything so bad it goes to shit.
Id rather play 5 hours of quality content than 120 of repetitive boring dragged out shite. Persona would be good as 40ish hour games. Editing is good, but vidya fans want long games, and fucking sequels up the ass because 100 fucking hours isn't enough.

>>mfw I don't have the attention span that I used to
thats because we have jobs, time is important now, no longer i can read guides for hours

>mfw games are too goddamned big and overwhelming anymore(skyrim, mgs5, witcher 3 etc.)
this is just padding, those games are full of useless shit, i only 100% a game if i really like it nowadays

This is also what i have become. 8 to 18 hours is normally a good length for single player. If the game is good ill replay it on hard or something

People like you are very rare on this board. Cred Forums is basically full of normalfags now that pretend they are smarter than other normalfags that don't use, Cred Forums for example. It is kind of hilarious.

The fuck user?
Just hit them all like everyone else?
>mfw my dad back in the day read every game manual first and looked at the control scheme a bajillion times
>mfw said i was lazy for just finding shit out intuitively.

Bro it's getting to the point where i need adderal to focus on videogames

Fuck. For like 5 seconds i legit thought this was a good idea.

>mfw playing bloodborne and not getting my ass kicked repeatedly
I pictured my retirement to be full of playing videogames but I don't think I'll be able to do that by then

I'm less competitive now

But I still play a lot

Yeah tactical and turn based rpgs are what i am gonna have to do at that age.

I've never really bee able to complete single player games like Dark Souls or Witcher. I usually end up losing interest in them before even halfway done. I end up having to push myself through the campaigns in shooters that people would call too short like CoD or Halo. The only single player games I've replayed the campaigns in were I think Gears of War, Sonic ames, and Pokemon.

5 years ago nobody would have admitted to being a casual on Cred Forums. The amount of sympathetic replies this thread is getting proves we're getting old.

>I make the wrong build, or I missed something early on, so I restart and keep restarting over and over.
that one hit too close to home

>play any side-scroller with collectables like donkey kong/mario
>try to get them all in the first run
>end up autistically grinding the same level because I keep fucking up getting one piece
>despite enjoying the gameplay, drop the game instead of just ignoring the collectables
