I'm having trouble with lag when I use my Intuos 5 in Doodle or Die. Sometimes there's a delay from when I touch the pen to when the line starts drawing, and other times the line either only registers as a dot or it goes all screwy after I lift the pen from the tablet. It's making it really hard to draw stuff.

My intuos 4 does the same, it used to be better, not really sure how they managed to fuck it up so hard, but it's making it really hard to get smooth lines.

Go to control panel. Open Pen & Touch. See the option for "Press and hold"?
Double click that and uncheck the box for "Enable press and hold for right-clicking"

Confidence in lines. Chickenscratch is shit.

Know what you're drawing, exactly what you're looking for and what lines and forms you want on paper, where you want them, how they interact, etc. A huuuuuge beginner mistake is drawing a line, going "wait that doesn't look right", then erasing it (or ctrl+z if on a tablet) and drawing the same line over and over and over again until it either "looks right" or they give up. For this reason I suggest you practice with a pen. At least, that's how I got gud, just doodling with pen in class instead of paying attention.

Besides a general understanding of how 3D forms project onto paper and knowing what the fuck you're drawing before you do it, also look at a bunch of art/porn/whatever and study how and why people drew what they did.

Also look at real life - how clothes drape, how skin stretches and folds, how people move and crumple, etc

It's a method of trial-and-error. It doesn't help you build confidence, it just teaches you to slog through drawing until you "get it".

Switch to a pen for a little bit. Nothing fancy, I use a ballpoint roller thing and it works. Do some small immediate doodles with curved lines (for example, draw a slime from dragon's quest without chickenscratching the outlines while maintaining symmetry) then do some stuff with straight, cleanly placed lines (like a small cartoon robot).

Then go bigger.

There's a difference between knowing what you want to draw and knowing what it looks like.

For example, take a car. On the left of this really bad MSPaint tutorial is what's recognizable as a car. But this isn't what cars *actually* look like. This is just a shitty abstract icon of a car. To actually draw a car you have to know what it's made of (formwise) and just build off of that.

So I start with a box, trapezoidal prism, then curve off the edges, pull out fenders,

tl;dr everything is built off of basic shapes, cubes, cones, tubes, extruded bits. Build from these, smooth them out.

Anyone can draw, it all depends on how much time and effort you are willing to put into it. Having talent helps but hard work is just as good as being naturally good at it. You won't get better if you aren't willing to spend the time on it.

this will probably come out more jumbled that I want it to, but drawings are essentially screencaps of someone's eyeballs (real or imaginary). What you see is 2D, but the world you're seeing is 3D. So it's absolutely necessary to think in 3D.

Look, if you want to start, just go get a piece of paper and a pen (not a pencil) and draw some cubes. Just straight up cubes in different orientations. Draw a bunch of them, and make sure to switch up the positions so you don't get a "formula" for doing it. Do it in class if you want, that's what I did for all of high school.

Then tomorrow draw a cube on top of another cube. Make sure they interact in space.

How do I make the next description to continue the chain. I just don't understand how this works. Sometimes it asks me to caption a pic but why would I do that? Wasn't that picture drawn because someone already made a thing for it. I DON'T GET IT
