Every unit sound in starcraft/brood war is permanently etched into the very fiber of my being

There is a simple meta-lore explanation.

Arrakis is a desert planet and you can't build anything on top of dunes, so the refinery had to be placed elsewhere while the harvester collected spice in the desert.
Blizzard copied every last bit of the details, separating refinery from the resource as well.

So yeah, it is that way because of lore reasons.
It's just not Starcraft lore.
Now you got me thinking which RTS was the first one to make sensible refineries and the first one to come to mind is TA but 97 is a bit too late, chances are something had done it earlier.

Bruh, you get stimpacks, firebats, and medics from it. The scream is one of painful experimentation and medical practice.

It helps that they had aerial, ground and naval units in one game.

When you have too many units, you either end up with a bunch of units feeling similar and overlapping in their roles, or you end up with balance problems. Usually its both.

Some units end up overpowered and used all the time while other units are not worth it.

Now that you mention it, it's pretty impressive how every unit had use. RA2 had even more units and nothing was useless.
