They hired a shit writer for one. Writing a canon protagonist is another difficult problem. Add in that they were messing with some pretty important lore in the BG games makes thing murky. Sure, Bhaal, at the time of writing the games, was dead and never coming back but almost twenty years on they decide to bring back a lot of the old gods. Shit, now we're stepping all over those old games and shitty books. Guess we gotta incorporate them in somehow.

I disagree on a few points. GoA and WH feel like disjointed sequel filler, the latter is a mediocre at best conclusion to your character's story. Leliana's Song is a higher quality than both, gives good loot if you assemble the armour too. All worth playing though.
